American League Game Summary - Cleveland at Detroit

Final Score: Cleveland 4 - Detroit 2

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Paul Byrd pitched seven innings of two-run ball as the Cleveland Indians took the first of a four-game set against the Detroit Tigers, 4-2, at Comerica Park.

Byrd (3-5) was charged with just four hits and had two strikeouts to pick up the 100th win of his career while Casey Blake had a two-run double for the Indians, who have won two of their last three games.

"Since it was my fourth try it was on my mind all night," said Byrd about his 100th win. "Its a very big deal for me, because I love baseball and I'm very happy to have been able to win so many games."

Jeff Larish and Brandon Inge each had a solo home run for the Tigers, who have dropped their last four games. Justin Verlander (2-9) was tagged with the loss as he gave up three runs on five hits in seven innings of work.

"We haven't been swinging the bats, and we need to keep grinding and grinding until we find something that works," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "It's almost a mystery to me that we haven't been able to score runs on a consistent basis. Saying that I'm shocked might be a little strong, but it is in the ballpark."

Cleveland grabbed the lead in the fourth inning with three runs. With one out, Ryan Garko walked, Jhonny Peralta singled and David Dellucci followed with a walk to load the bases. Blake followed with a double to left to chase home two runners and Franklin Gutierrez's RBI single gave the team a 3-0 lead.

Detroit, which had just two hits through the first five innings, got on the board in the sixth as Inge led off the frame with a shot over the left field fence to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Tigers chipped away further in the seventh inning as Larish belted a solo home run, the first of his career, that just cleared the wall in right to make it a 3-2 game.

The Indians, though, got the run back in the eighth on Garko's leadoff blast that just squeezed past the left field foul pole.

"I wasn't trying for a home run, just wanted to get a good at-bat," said Garko. "He threw a strike up the middle and I was able to hit it. It's sure funny how one swing can decide a game."

Masa Kobayashi retired the Tigers in order in the eighth and Joe Borowski worked around a one-out single in the ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season.
