American League Game Summary - Toronto at New York

Final Score: Toronto 9 - NY Yankees 3

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Rod Barajas hit two doubles and finished with two runs batted in, and the Blue Jays spoiled the starting debut of New York's Joba Chamberlain with a 9-3 victory over the Yankees in the opener of a three- game series.

The 22-year-old Chamberlain lasted 2 1/3 innings and threw 62 pitches in the first start of his major league career, giving up two runs -- one earned -- on one hit with three strikeouts, but he walked four batters before being removed.

"It didn't go very good," Chamberlain said. "It's something to build off of, it wasn't the best, it wasn't what I would've liked. I've got to build off of this and get my team deeper into the game."

The right-hander had been incredible in a setup role since being called up to the big leagues last August. After pitching to a sparkling 0.38 earned run average in 19 games last season, Chamberlain carried his success into this year, having surrendered a run in just four of his 20 appearances prior to Tuesday's setback. However, Chamberlain was thrust into the starting role thanks to injuries and ineffectiveness to two of the other heralded Yankee pitching prospects - Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes.

David Eckstein went 2-for-4 and had three RBI for the Blue Jays, who snapped a two-game skid and have won with the victory and have won nine of their last 12 games.

Alex Rios, Marco Scutaro and Scott Rolen each had a hit and an RBI for the Blue Jays, who broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning. Rios now has a 24-game hit streak versus the Yankees, and Scutaro has hit in eight straight games overall.

Roy Halladay (7-5) got the win after going six innings and giving up two runs on six hits. He's won five of his last six decisions and improved to 11-5 lifetime against the Yankees.

The Yankees called up long reliever Dan Giese (0-1) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre prior to Tuesday's game and he took the loss despite pitching 3 2/3 frames and yielding only one run on five hits.

Johnny Damon went 3-for-4, extending his hit streak to 12 games, and missed the cycle by a home run, but New York lost its third straight contest and fell into last place in the AL East, a half-game behind Baltimore.

Derek Jeter went 2-for-4, tying him with Mickey Mantle at 2,415 hits for third on the Yankees' all-time list. Hideki Matsui had two hits and an RBI in defeat.

The Blue Jays got to Chamberlain early. Shannon Stewart led the game off with a walk. After Scutaro struck out, Stewart moved to second on a balk and held at third on a passed ball by Jose Molina. Rios then grounded out to Jason Giambi, plating Stewart. Rolen followed with a single, and Matt Stairs and Lyle Overbay worked walks to load the bases, but Chamberlain got Barajas to strike out on a foul tip to avoid further damage.

"We worked him good," Toronto manager John Gibbons said of Chamberlain. "His pitch count isn't even an issue. They made him work, it wasn't easy, he was in some jams and got out. That's the way he is, he gets out of it."

The Yankees answered in the home first. Damon started things off with a triple to right. Jeter grounded out and Bobby Abreu went down swinging, but Alex Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Matsui slapped a line drive single to left, plating Damon, and Giambi followed with another RBI base hit.

Toronto evened things up in the third. Rios worked a one-out walk, stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by Molina. Giese, who came on in relief of Chamberlain, got Rolen to ground out, but Rios scored.

Barajas led off the fourth with a double, moved to third on Brad Wilkerson's single and crossed home plate when Eckstein lifted a sacrifice fly to center for a 3-2 lead.

The Jays broke the game open in the seventh. Jose Veras started the frame in relief and gave up consecutive singles to Scutaro and Rios. Rolen went down swinging, but Edwar Ramirez was called in from the bullpen and walked Stairs to load the bases. Overbay worked another walk, plating Scutaro, before Barajas smacked a two-run double to left. Wilkerson was intentionally walked to load the bases, and LaTroy Hawkins was brought in for the Yanks.

Eckstein added another two-run double, Stewart walked and Scutaro hit a sac fly for a 9-2 cushion.

Brian Tallet came in to face New York in the home seventh and walked Melky Cabrera and Damon. Jeter then grounded into a force out, leaving runners at the corners, and Abreu followed with an RBI groundout.
