Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Ryan Braun launched the towering go-ahead home run in the sixth inning off Randy Johnson and the Milwaukee Brewers ruined the Big Unit's historic night, taking the middle contest of a three- game set, 7-1, over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Johnson recorded eight strikeouts through 6 1/3 innings, moving him past Roger Clemens into second on the all-time strikeout list with 4,680. The five-time Cy Young Award winner retired Milwaukee's second batter of the game, Mike Cameron, on three pitches to take sole possession of second. He entered the contest tied with Clemens for second.
Johnson is looking up at only Nolan Ryan, who sits atop the list with 5,714 career strikeouts.
Johnson (4-2) gave up four runs - three earned - on six hits, taking the loss. He mowed down the Brewers for five innings, allowing only three hits, but ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh.
Braun hit his 16th home run of the season, a two-run shot, while Prince Fielder and J.J. Hardy added home runs of their own for Milwaukee, which has rattled off five straight victories, continuing an impressive 7-1 homestand. They've won eight of nine overall.
Seth McClung (3-2) tossed six effective innings of one-run ball on six hits without allowing a walk for the win. McClung fanned four and picked up his first two major league hits, both off Johnson. Brian Shouse earned his second save of the season.
"That's the same old Randy Johnson," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "Even after all those injuries, he's still very dominant. McClung did a nice job though mixing his pitches. We've been waiting all year to get on a roll like this."
Mark Reynolds drove in the sole run for Arizona, which has dropped seven of nine.
Milwaukee finally got to Johnson in a big way when Braun launched a monstrous two-run homer to left, just missing the sliding board in Miller Park's upper deck, to put the Brewers ahead, 2-1. Cameron worked a walk prior to Braun's blast, to start the sixth.
The Brewers got back on the scoreboard in the seventh. Hardy lined a single to right, leading off. Pinch-hitter Joe Dillon doubled down the left field line with one out for a 3-1 lead. Dillon moved to third on the play after Orlando Hudson's relay throw to the plate hit Hardy and rolled away. The sequence was enough to end Johnson's night in favor of Juan Cruz. Rickie Weeks took advantage of the miscue, lofting a sacrifice fly to left, giving Milwaukee a 4-1 cushion.
Fielder tried to match Braun's blast, taking a first-pitch changeup from Max Scherzer to deep center with one out in the eighth. Hardy added a two-run shot three batters later to give Milwaukee a commanding 7-1 advantage.
Arizona put up the game's first run in the fourth. Hudson led off with a single to left and Reynolds lined a one-out RBI double to right.
