San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Carlos Zambrano worked his way through five innings on the mound, but he did his most damage at the plate with three hits and an RBI, as Chicago held on to beat San Diego, 7-6, for its eighth straight victory.
Zambrano (8-1) gave up three runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts on the rubber and singled twice, tripled and drove home a crucial run at the plate. The right-hander has won seven straight decisions and his ERA sits at 2.51.
Jim Edmonds doubled twice with two RBI and Ryan Theriot finished 3-for-5 for the Cubs, who put one in the win column on the road to support their 26-8 start at Wrigley Field.
"It's been fun. Everyone's chipping in. It seems like every night there's a different guy who's getting the big hits for us," Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee said.
Cha Seung Baek (1-1) gave up four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 frames with two strikeouts and one walk. Adrian Gonzalez finished 3-for-4 with a three-run home run, four RBI and two runs scored for San Diego, who have dropped two in a row.
"They're on a nice roll here," Padres manager Bud Black said of the Cubs. "They've won eight in a row, they're swinging the bats very well, they're playing with a lot of confidence."
Baek started his first game with the Padres since being acquired in a trade with Seattle.
Kerry Wood had a tense final frame, but he coaxed a Brady Clark flyout to the middle of the warning track to end the game.
Carlos Marmol had been nearly unhittable all season, but San Diego made the ninth inning a tense one with a single swing of the bat. Jody Gerut walked, Brian Giles singles and Gonzalez followed with a long three-run home run to right field.
San Diego put Zambrano into early difficulty in the first. Gerut singled, Giles walked and Gonzalez drove home Gerut with a single to right. Kevin Kouzmanoff's triple plated the other two baserunners for the 3-0 advantage.
Aramis Ramirez singled leading off the second, moved to third on Kosuke Fukodome's single and scored on a wild pitch. Chicago then tied the game in the fourth on Edmonds' RBI double and Zambrano's run-scoring triple past Gerut in center.
Theriot singled in the fifth, scampered to third on Ramirez's double and scored when Fukodome lofted a high sacrifice fly to right field.
The Cubs kept the scoring going in the sixth, scoring a pair of runs due in part to three consecutive hits. Mark DeRosa drove a single to left, Henry Blanco slapped a looping single into no-man's land near first and Zambrano again helped himself with an infield single down the third-base line.
Soriano's sacrifice fly pushed the edge to 5-3 and Theriot's single plated Blanco for the 6-3 edge. Another Edmonds' RBI double, this one in the seventh to complete four straight run-scoring frames, plated Fukudome for the 7-3 advantage.
