Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Kenji Johjima finished 2-for-4 with a double, two runs batted in and a steal of home plate as the Seattle Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers, 5-0, in the second contest of a three-game series.
Jeremy Reed added a solo home run and Ichiro Suzuki knocked in a run for the Mariners, who have won three of four after a seven-game losing streak.
Felix Hernandez (3-5) was magnificent in earning the win. The right-hander allowed only two hits, while striking out seven with no walks, over seven innings.
"Felix was pretty good and we finally scored him a few runs," Seattle manager John McLaren said. "He was throwing the ball really well. It's a good win and a clean game, good defense, a little hitting, great pitching. It was a pretty good effort."
Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez each singled for the Tigers' only hits. Detroit has lost five of its last eight.
Justin Verlander (2-8) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits over seven frames. He struck out one and walked a pair.
"I think he was a little hyper in the first couple of innings," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said about Verlander. "But I think he gave us a chance. I dont think his curve or change-up were as good today."
After Hernandez struck out the side in the top of the first, Seattle plated a pair in the home half. The Mariners loaded the bases with one down and after Adrian Beltre was retired on a line drive to center, Johjima roped a base hit to left to score two.
Seattle tacked on two more in the fourth when Johjima led off with a double and moved to third on a ground out by Reed. Johjima was then credited with a steal of home plate with Miguel Cairo at bat. In an apparent squeeze attempt, Verlander rushed his delivery and the ball got away from catcher Ivan Rodriguez, allowing Johjima to score.
Cairo and Yuniesky Betancourt followed with base hits, putting runners on the corners. Cairo came in to make it 4-0 when Suzuki grounded into a force out.
Detroit was unable to muster any offense against the Mariners' staff, as Brandon Morrow threw a perfect eighth to continue the shutout. Reed's solo shot in the eighth gave Seattle a five-run advantage.
Closer J.J. Putz then came on in a non-save situation in the ninth and retired the top of the Tigers' order to preserve the win.
