Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Grady Sizemore smacked two home runs and made a game-saving catch in the ninth, helping the Cleveland Indians edge the Kansas City Royals, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Kauffman Stadium.
Casey Blake added the eventual game-winning two-run homer in the sixth sending the Tribe to their second win in the last three.
Cliff Lee (8-1) earned the win, allowing four runs on 10 hits over six innings and Joe Borowski notched his fourth save of the season.
"It was definitely great defense and a few key hits," Lee said of his eighth win. "The home run Casey (Blake) hit, especially."
John Buck had two runs batted in on two doubles and Mark Teahen had two hits and scored twice. Esteban German added three hits for the hard-luck Royals, who have now dropped 12 straight contests.
Royals starter Gil Meche worked five innings of three-run ball on six hits and two walks while fanning six.
German stroked a one-out double in the ninth off Borowski. Alex Gordon lined out to left for the second out and Sizemore made a running catch, smashing against the wall in right-center to rob Jose Guillen of the possible game- tying hit for the final out.
Brett Tomko (2-7) relieved Meche in the sixth and promptly gave up the lead. Jhonny Peralta doubled to center and Blake blasted a home run to center, giving the Tribe a 5-4 lead.
"I feel bad," Tomko said. "Gil (Meche) threw a good game. It would have been nice to come in there in a new situation and get the job done."
Kansas City belted three singles in the home sixth from Joey Gathright, David DeJesus and German. DeJesus overran second base on German's two-out poke and was tagged out as he tried to dive back moments before Gathright touched home plate, robbing the Royals of the tying run.
Sizemore led off the contest by depositing a Meche fastball into the seats in right.
Kansas City got to Lee in the second for two. Miguel Olivo worked a leadoff walk and Teahen followed with a single to center. Buck slapped a double to right plating Olivo and moving the runner to third. Gathright then brought in Teahen with a groundout.
The Royals were back on the board in the fourth. Teahen tripled to right starting off the frame and Buck followed with his second double of the game. Three batters later, DeJesus looped a single to right bringing Buck around to score the second run of the inning.
Cleveland cut the lead to one in the fifth. Asdrubal Cabrera laced a one-out double to center but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple. Andy Marte followed with a single and Sizemore cranked his second homer of the game to right.
