National League Game Summary - Colorado at Chicago

Final Score: Colorado 4 - Chicago Cubs 8

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Alfonso Soriano went 2-for-5 and knocked in two runs, as the Chicago Cubs rallied to down the Colorado Rockies, 8-4, in the opener of a four-game set at Wrigley Field.

Jason Marquis gave up three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings for Chicago, fresh off a sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The comeback made a winner out of Michael Wuertz (1-1), who allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings.

Derrek Lee clubbed a solo home run, while Reed Johnson finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Ryan Theriot was 2-for-3, walked twice and scored two runs.

Jeff Francis gave up three runs on six hits in five innings for Colorado, which has lost its last nine games on the road. Matt Herges (2-2) yielded two unearned runs to absorb the loss. Taylor Buchholz was charged with three runs -- two earned -- on three hits and did not retire a batter in the eighth.

Ian Stewart fell a home run shy of the cycle, going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Ryan Spilborghs also had three hits.

The Cubs scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to erase a 4-3 deficit. Consecutive singles with one out by Soriano and Theriot put runners on the corners for Lee, who hit a tapper on the third base side. Herges charged after the ball, but his throw hit Lee, allowing Soriano to score and Theriot to advance to third. Herges then clipped the jersey of Aramis Ramirez to load the bases, and Geovany Soto's sacrifice fly put the Cubs in front for good.

"I just wanted to have a quality at-bat right there," said Soto. "Once I got to two strikes, I wanted to drive the ball to the outfield. He gave me a good pitch to hit, so I drove it out to right field."

After Carlos Marmol tossed a 1-2-3 eighth, Chicago tacked on three insurance runs in the next frame. Buchholz relieved Herges and gave up a leadoff double to Mark DeRosa. Ronny Cedeno entered the game as a pinch runner and moved to third on Johnson's sacrifice bunt. Johnson reached first on Buchholz's throwing error and Micah Hoffpauir followed with a pinch-hit that plated Cedeno. Following a double-steal, Soriano laced a two-run single to center to give the Cubs an 8-4 lead.

Kerry Wood struck out the side in the ninth to finish off the game.

Chicago grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Ramirez's RBI double. Lee belted a solo home run with one-out in the third to make it a 2-0 game.

The Rockies got on the board in the next frame via Yorvit Torrealba's sacrifice fly, but Chicago got the run back in the home fourth when Johnson singled to right, scoring Kosuke Fukudome, who led off the inning with a double.

Colorado drew even with two runs in the sixth. Singles by Stewart and Torrealba and a walk to Omar Quintanilla loaded the bases for pinch-hitter Jeff Baker, who Marquis retired on strikes.

Neal Cotts, recalled from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day, took over on the mound and pinch-hitter Willy Taveras greeted him by fisting the ball off the webbing of first baseman Lee's glove for a two-run single. Seth Smith was then called out on strikes before Todd Helton drew a walk to reload the bases. Wuertz was summoned from the bullpen and fanned Garrett Atkins to end the rally.

The Rockies went ahead, 4-3, in the top of the seventh, as Spilborghs led off with a single, stole second and scored when Stewart sliced a double into the left field corner.
