American League Game Summary - Minnesota at Kansas City

Final Score: Minnesota 9 - Kansas City 8

Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Craig Monroe hit a pinch-hit, game-tying three-run homer in the ninth inning, and Justin Morneau's solo shot in the 10th made the difference, as Minnesota stunned Kansas City with a 9-8 comeback win and extended the Royals' losing streak to 10 games.

Mike Lamb went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, and Carlos Gomez had two hits and two RBI for the Twins, who have won the first two games of this three-game set and four of five.

Livan Hernandez gave up eight runs -- six earned -- on 13 hits in six-plus innings of work, but avoided the loss. Jesse Crain (3-2) got the win for getting the final out of the ninth. Joe Nathan picked up his 14th save with a scoreless 11th frame.

Kansas City starter Zack Greinke threw eight innings and gave up just three runs on five hits, while striking out eight. But Ramon Ramirez was touched for four runs in the ninth inning to ruin the outing, and Joel Peralta (0-2) picked up the loss after allowing the final two runs.

Royals outfielder Jose Guillen was not pleased with the outcome.

"We have too many (bleeping) babies here who don't know how to play the (bleeping) game," he said. "We're going to teach them the hard way and we're going to teach them the easy way. This (stuff) is going to change in here. I can tell you that. I can promise you that. It's going to change. Soon. Believe me when I tell you that."

Alex Gordon and Joey Gathright each had three hits and an RBI, as every member of the Royals lineup but Tony Pena had at least one hit. But Kansas City went on to lose another game in extra innings, as the club dropped a 4-3 decision to the Twins, in 12 frames, on Tuesday.

"Crazy. As long as I'll ever play, I don't think I'll see two games in a row like that," Morneau said. "Inside-the-park three-run homer to tie the game (Tuesday), then go to extra innings. Then tonight, five runs with two outs. It's amazing. That's the only way to put it."

Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Royals had the game seemingly in hand with an 8-3 lead. Ramirez started out well on the mound, as he got Michael Cuddyer to strike out. Even after he gave up a single to Jason Kubel, he struck out Delmon Young.

But he fell apart, unleashing a wild pitch that sent Kubel to second. Lamb followed with a single to plate Kubel, and Brendan Harris and Gomez each singled after that to score another run and get Minnesota within three.

Ramirez's brief outing was finished there, as Peralta came out of the bullpen. Alexi Casilla -- who didn't have a hit in the game -- was also lifted in favor of pinch-hitter Monroe. Peralta threw Monroe three straight balls before working back to a full count.

Monroe, however, drilled the sixth pitch of the at-bat just over the short wall in left field to tie the game at 8-8.

Kansas City couldn't muster any offense in the bottom half, and in the 10th, Peralta gave up another decisive blast -- a leadoff homer to Morneau that just got over the wall in right-center.

Joe Nathan set the Royals down in order in the home half to end the contest.

The Royals had the bases loaded with no outs in the first inning, but got only one run out of the situation, as Guillen grounded into a double play that allowed David DeJesus to score.

An RBI single from Gomez and sacrifice fly from Casilla put the Twins on top in the third, but Kansas City took the lead right back in the home half.

Gathright and Gordon hit consecutive two-out singles, resulting in runners on the corners. Guillen followed with a single to drive in one, and Miguel Olivo's double plated Gordon for a 3-2 Royals lead.

A pair of gaffes by left fielder Young helped Kansas City gain an even greater edge in the fourth. Billy Butler and Alberto Callaspo led off with singles, and after Pena flied out, DeJesus smacked a liner to left. Young, however, made a throwing error as Butler crossed home, and both remaining runners ended up in scoring position.

Gathright then hit a sacrifice fly to left for the second out, pushing Callaspo across and the Royals' lead to 5-2. Young could have ended the damage there during the next at-bat, when Gordon lofted a fly ball to left field.

Instead, he simply didn't make the catch despite appearing to be in good position, directly under the ball. DeJesus motored around from second for a 6-2 Royals lead.

Lamb singled in Kubel in the seventh for the Twins, but Kansas City struck back with two in the bottom half, thanks to another Minnesota fielding error.

Gathright hit a lead-off single and stole second. Then, Gordon lofted another fly ball, this time to right field. Cuddyer, though, took a bad route to the ball, got twisted around and couldn't make the catch a few feet from the warning track.

The ball bounced over the wall for a ground-rule double and Gathright scored automatically. Later in the inning, Olivo batted Gordon in with a single to center, and the Royals led 8-3.
