Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Alex Cintron knocked in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th inning, as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees, 10-9, in a game that saw a 67-minute rain delay.
Johnny Damon worked a lead-off walk off of Matt Albers to begin the 11th. Derek Jeter bunted him over to second and reached first on an errant throw by Melvin Mora. Bobby Abreu was intentionally walked to get to Alex Rodriguez, who grounded into a 4-2-5 double play. Hideki Matsui though, cracked an RBI single to put the Yankees up 9-8.
LaTroy Hawkins took the hill for New York to try and close it out, but Mora hit a lead-off single. Two batters later, Aubrey Huff blasted an RBI double to center, and moved to third on the throw. Luke Scott and Kevin Millar were both intentionally walked to load the bases. Cintron then hit a long fly ball over the head of shallow-playing Abreu to score Huff and win the game.
Millar was 3-for-5 with two home runs totaling three runs batted in for the Orioles, who have won two in a row after a five-game skid. Mora was 3-for-6 with a two-run homer, as Ramon Hernandez went 3-for-5 with a solo home run.
Brian Burres started for Baltimore and went just 3 2/3 innings giving up eight runs on 10 hits in the no-decision. Albers (3-1) got the win after he threw the 10th and 11th, giving up just one run.
Damon went 4-for-5 with a three-run homer for the Yankees, who have dropped two in a row on the heels of a five-game win streak. Jason Giambi and Rodriguez both hit solo homers in defeat. Abreu went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run.
Ian Kennedy started for New York and was touched for four runs -- three earned -- in three innings, before leaving with a strained muscle. Hawkins (1-1) absorbed the loss as he gave up two runs in the 11th.
The Yankees pulled ahead in the second inning. Giambi hit a one-out, 415-foot homer to right field. Wilson Betemit and Robinson Cano followed with consecutive singles, before Jose Molina flied out. Damon cleared the table with a three-run blast to right that made it 4-0.
The Orioles got those runs back in the home second. Huff led-off with a single, and Scott went down swinging. Millar then deposited a Kennedy offering over the fence in left-center. Hernandez made it back-to-back with another blast to left-center. Adam Jones kept the rally going with a single, tagged and advanced to second when Freddie Bynum flied to center and moved to third on a passed ball. Brian Roberts then hit a ball to Rodriguez, who botched the throw to first, allowing Jones to cross home plate and tie the game at 4-4.
Kennedy left the game after the third inning due to a strained right lat muscle. Ross Ohlendorf came on in relief of the youngster.
New York pulled ahead in the fourth. Damon hit a two-out double and Jeter brought him around with a single. Abreu then homered to right, and Rodriguez made it back-to-back with a shot to right. Lance Cormier came in to replace Burres and got Matsui to ground out to end the inning, but the damage had been done and it was 8-4 in favor of the Yankees.
Baltimore clawed back and tied it up in the fifth. Roberts singled off Ohlendorf and Mora brought him home with a homer to left-center. Nick Markakis and Huff were both retired, but Scott added a solo shot. Millar followed with another solo home run, and it was 8-8.
The Yankees rallied to no avail as the rain started coming down in the ninth. Damon cracked a lead-off double off of George Sherrill, but Jeter and Abreu both went down swinging. Rodriguez was then intentionally walked, and during Matsui's at-bat, the runners executed a double steal. Matsui, though, lined out to Millar.
After the Yankees were retired, the umpiring crew decided to put the tarp on the field for a rain delay.
Mariano Rivera came in to pitch the home ninth after a 67-minute delay and retired the side 1-2-3 as the clubs headed for extra innings.
