Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Kosuke Fukudome went 2-for-3, adding an RBI- double in the Cubs' three-run seventh inning as Chicago downed the Los Angeles Dodgers, 3-1, on a windy, frigid night at Wrigley Field.
Fukudome also showcased his glove, coming through with several inning-saving plays in the field for Chicago, which has taken the first two of the three- game set. Aramis Ramirez added two hits and the go-ahead RBI for the victors.
Cubs starter Sean Gallagher (2-1) earned the win, tossing seven innings of one-run ball on just four hits and two walks while striking out three. Kerry Wood recorded his 12th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
"[Gallagher] pitched a real good ballgame," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "The conditions were good for both pitchers. And they both pitched pretty well."
Hiroki Kuroda (2-4) was credited with the loss for the Dodgers, throwing 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs -- one earned -- on seven hits and three walks.
Andre Ethier went 2-for-3, while Blake DeWitt knocked in the lone run for LA, which has dropped four of its last five.
Fukudome and Kuroda were teammates on the 2004 Japanese Olympic team. In their first meeting against one another in the majors, the two battled to a stalemate with Fukudome going 1-for-2 with a walk against his fellow countryman.
Kuroda was pulled in the seventh before facing Fukudome for a fourth time, leaving with a 1-0 lead and runners on the corners.
The Dodgers called on Jonathan Broxton to get out of the jam, but the reliever failed to get out unscathed. Mike Fontenot dribbled a bouncer to the left side of the infield, and DeWitt couldn't handle the slow roller, bringing in the tying run.
After a Derrek Lee flyout, Ramirez and Fukudome recorded consecutive run- scoring hits to give Chicago a two-run advantage.
Reliever Carlos Marmol almost gave the runs back in the eighth, loading the bases before fanning James Loney and inducing an inning-ending groundout off the bat of Matt Kemp.
Wood worked around a one-out single to finish off the win.
The Dodgers' run in the fourth held up until Chicago broke through three innings later. DeWitt bounced one through the left side of the infield to bring in Loney. Alfonso Soriano had a shot to throw Loney out at the plate, but the left fielder's attempt plunked Loney on the basepath before the first baseman reached home.
"Right now we are not doing a good job of picking up that one hit we need to get over the hump," Dodgers catcher Dan Ardoin said. "Guys might be trying to do too much at this point."
