Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Nick Swisher's lone hit sparked a 12th inning three-run rally as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Cleveland Indians, 6-3, in the opener of a three-game set from Progressive Field.
Orlando Cabrera, A.J. Pierzynski and Carlos Quentin each had a run batted in for the White Sox, who have won two in a row and 10 of their last 12 overall. Jim Thome went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and finished with two RBI, and pinch-hitter Brian Anderson had an RBI in his lone at-bat.
Chicago starter Javier Vazquez was touched for three runs on nine hits in six frames in the no-decision. Boone Logan (2-1) got the win after he threw 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief. Bobby Jenks got his 13th save of the year as he pitched the 12th and gave up only two hits. The save was Jenks' 100th for his career.
Victor Martinez went 3-for-6 with an RBI for the Indians, who have dropped nine of their last 10 contests. David Dellucci was 2-for-3 with a solo shot. Jhonny Peralta also had a solo homer in the loss. Casey Blake added two hits.
Cleveland starter Paul Byrd also took a no-decision as he was touched for three runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 frames. Scott Elarton (0-1) absorbed the loss after he gave up three runs on four hits in the 12th.
Elarton took over on the hill for the Indians in the 12th and gave up a lead- off single to Swisher. Alexei Ramirez followed with a single that put runners on the corners. Cabrera followed with a single that scored DeWayne Wise, who was pinch-running for Swisher, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. Pierzynski was then intentionally walked, and Quentin had an RBI groundout. Jermaine Dye was also issued an intentional free pass, and Anderson followed with an RBI double to put the White Sox up 6-3.
Jenks toed the rubber for Chicago in the 12th and gave up back-to-back singles to Martinez and Jamey Carroll to start the frame. Peralta, though, grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to put a damper on the rally. Franklin Gutierrez went down swinging to make it official.
Consecutive singles from Cabrera, Pierzynski and Quentin to begin the game loaded the bases. Dye was then caught looking at the third strike for the first out. Thome added an RBI grounded out to first and the White Sox were up 1-0.
The Tribe got even in the home first. Dellucci blasted the equalizer into the seats in right field on a 1-1 fastball.
Cleveland pulled ahead, 2-1, in the third. Dellucci was hit by a pitch and Ben Francisco singled to make it first and second. Martinez then rolled a single into right field, allowing Dellucci to come around.
Peralta's homer in the fifth put the Indians up 3-1.
The White Sox inched their way closer in the sixth, as Thome's first-pitch homer to left made it a one-run game.
Chicago rallied in the seventh to knot the contest up. Cabrera cracked a two- out double to center field that chased Byrd in favor of Rafael Perez. Perez gave up the game-tying single to Pierzynski before getting out of the jam.
Neither team could muster any more runs as the ninth came to a close, and the game headed to extra innings.
