Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Ben Francisco's fielding gaffe in the 10th inning allowed Jarrod Saltalamacchia to score from first on a two-out Ramon Vazquez single, and the Texas Rangers downed the Cleveland Indians, 2-1, in the finale of a three-game set.
Masahide Kobayashi (2-2) retired the first two Rangers in the 10th, but issued a free pass to the Texas catcher. Vazquez then lined a single to right, and Francisco went to one knee to snare the ball on the bounce.
He pulled up early, though, and the ball skipped through his legs, allowing Saltalamacchia to come all the way around from first with the go-ahead run. Ian Kinsler then grounded out to short to end the frame, but the damage was done.
Pinch-hitter Ryan Garko worked a two-out walk in the home half of the inning, but Jhonny Peralta struck out to end the game.
Jamey Wright (3-1) picked up the win for two scoreless frames of relief, after starter Doug Mathis scattered seven hits over six frames, allowing one run. Kinsler hit a solo homer for the Rangers, who took two of three from the flailing Indians and have won three of four overall.
The loss ruined a good start by C.C. Sabathia, who has appeared to turn things around after struggling to start this season. Sabathia allowed only five hits and a run with five strikeouts and two walks over seven frames, lowering his earned run average to 4.74. Victor Martinez's RBI single in the first was the only offense for the Indians, who left 11 runners on base, and have lost eight of nine.
"I'm very amazed the way that it is right now," Sabathia said of the struggling Indians. "We do have such a good team and we have guys in here who have been in the big leagues for a long time and who know what this game is about. Any day, any minute, any inning, we'll come out of it."
Francisco lined a one-out double to left in the first, and Travis Hafner followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Martinez's single up the middle scored Francisco, but Cleveland missed out on a chance for more. Michael Aubrey lined out to third, and Peralta grounded out, stranding two runners.
"We missed way too many opportunities offensively," Indians manager Eric Wedge said. "We created opportunities early for ourselves, but didn't take advantage of it."
Kinsler's leadoff homer in the sixth, his sixth of the season, knotted the game at 1-1.
Asdrubal Cabrera fisted a one-out single up the middle in the ninth, and moved to second on a wild pitch. Grady Sizemore struck out and Francisco flied out to center, though, sending the game to extras.
