Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Seth Smith hit his first career home run, a three-run shot in the fourth inning, and Aaron Cook pitched a complete game as the Colorado Rockies defeated the New York Mets, 4-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set at Coors Field.
Smith, who was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs on Saturday, also drew a walk in the win. Yorvit Torrealba also knocked in a run for Colorado, which was limited to three hits. The Rockies have won five of their last eight.
Cook (7-3) was magnificent in going the distance for his seventh complete game. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits, while improving to 3-0 lifetime versus the Mets.
"Its nice," Cook said of his complete game. "I told myself stay focused, and get the ball down in the zone. I got a couple balls up, but fortunately, they werent able to cash in."
Jose Reyes went 1-for-4 with an RBI for the Mets, who have dropped six of their last seven.
John Maine (5-4) suffered the loss, pitching six innings and giving up four runs -- three earned -- on three hits. He struck out eight and walked four.
With the game scoreless after two innings, New York was able to manufacture a run in the third. Endy Chavez led off with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maine. Reyes then followed with a base hit to center to plate Chavez.
Colorado answered with three in the fourth. Todd Helton drew a one-out walk and Ryan Spilborghs reached on an error by Reyes, putting runners on first and second. Smith then launched a 2-2 fastball over the right field wall to put the home team ahead 3-1.
The Rockies added to their lead in the sixth. Helton got things started with a lead off double to left and, after Spilborghs was retired, Smith drew a walk. A single by Ian Stewart loaded the bases for Torrealba, who lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to make it a 4-1 game.
New York tried to mount a rally in the seventh, putting runners on first and second with one down, but Brian Schneider and Ryan Church struck out to end the inning.
Cook continued his solid outing in the ninth, retiring the Mets two, three and four hitters in order to preserve the win.
"Obviously, this isnt good," Schneider said about the Mets' struggles. "But were not down or giving up, I mean, thats not an option. At the same, though, this is frustrating because you dont want to be having these kinds of road trips."
