St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Evan Longoria drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a double, propelling the Tampa Bay Rays to a 5-4 win over Baltimore and a three-game sweep of the Orioles.
Jim Johnson struck out B.J. Upton to begin the frame, but was lifted in favor of George Sherrill, who missed on a 3-2 slider to walk Carlos Pena. Longoria then lofted a line drive to the gap in right center, and the ball went all the way to the fence as Pena scored easily to end the game.
"I started running off the bat. I had my mind made up, I was going to score," Pena said.
Said Rays manager Joe Maddon of Longoria's hit: "It just bisected the defense perfectly."
It made a winner out of Troy Percival (1-0), who got the final two outs in the top of the ninth after Trever Miller got the first.
Starter James Shields went eight innings and allowed four runs -- three earned -- on eight hits and a walk, with three strikeouts for the Rays, who have won five of six overall.
Longoria finished with two doubles, while Pena hit a two-run home run and Upton had a hit, two walks and a pair of stolen bases.
Sherrill (1-1) got the loss after Johnson had tossed 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the Orioles, who have lost five straight and six of seven. Daniel Cabrera struggled in the start, giving up four runs on nine hits and six walks in 5 2/3 frames.
Brian Roberts finished 2-for-4 with a triple, and Aubrey Huff homered in the loss for Baltimore.
"You have to give the Rays a lot of credit; they found a way to win," Orioles manager Dave Trembley said. "They played real good baseball the entire series. They got real good starting pitching, they had timely hitting and it was the best of three to try to get one, and it didn't happen."
Ramon Hernandez singled in Jay Payton in the second inning to give Baltimore the early edge.
But the Rays stormed back in the third. Pena followed an Upton walk with a homer to left-center field, and Longoria kept the rally going with a double. Eric Hinske plated the third baseman with a single to right, and Dioner Navarro smacked a double to bring around Hinske, pushing Tampa Bay's lead to 4-1.
However, the Orioles gradually got back in the game. Adam Jones hit a two-out double that scored Payton in the fifth, and an abrupt rally in the following frame provided the equalizing runs.
Roberts led off with a triple and easily scored in the next at-bat when Melvin Mora singled. Nick Markakis temporarily derailed Baltimore's momentum by grounding into a double play, but Huff blasted a solo shot to center for a 4-4 score.
