National League Game Summary - Chicago at Pittsburgh

Final Score: Chicago Cubs 4 - Pittsburgh 5

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Jason Bay knocked in three runs, including the game-winner in the 14th inning, as the Pittsburgh Pirates took a much-need 5-4 decision over the Chicago Cubs in the middle installment of three-game set at PNC Park.

Bay finished 4-for-6 at the plate with a two-run home run, which proved the only Pirates extra-base hit. Pittsburgh tallied 12 singles, two apiece from Adam LaRoche and Jason Michaels.

Pirates starter Phil Dumatrait came through with 5 2/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing five hits and three walks in a no decision, while John Grabow (4-1) earned the win after throwing three shutout innings in additional time.

Aramis Ramirez knocked in a pair for Chicago, while Geovany Soto and Kosuke Fukudome each recorded two hits and an RBI in defeat.

Starter Jason Marquis was touched for three runs on seven hits and three walks through 5 1/3 frames for the Cubs, who have lost three of four. Michael Wuertz (0-1) took the loss after allowing the unearned run in the 14th, his second inning of work.

The Pirates came into the game having lost nine of 10 to their divisional foes this season, but persevered in the four-hour, 21-minute-affair.

Leading 4-3 in the home ninth, Kerry Wood allowed a Luis Rivas sacrifice fly to send the game into extra innings. Bay actually came up with the winning run at second in the frame, but flew out to the right field warning track.

The left fielder came through in the 14th, however, as he laced a one-out offering from Wuertz over the center fielder's head to score Freddy Sanchez, who reached on shortstop Ryan Theriot's throwing error.

"We were up 3-1, all the sudden we were cruising a little bit," Bay said. "All the sudden it was kind of like having your throat ripped out again, especially to those guys. It was nice to finish it with a win."

Neither team managed to break through until the fourth, when Derrek Lee doubled and was brought in with a two-bagger down the third base line by Soto.

The lead didn't last long as Nate McLouth worked a one-out walk and Bay immediately followed by sending a 1-2 fastball into the left field seats.

After the Cubs' Mark DeRosa whiffed with two outs and the bases loaded in the away sixth, the Pirates made it a two-run game in the home half, as three consecutive one-out singles chased Marquis from the game. Michael's single scored Bay, but the Pirates left two on after Jose Bautista grounded into a inning-ending double play off reliever Bob Howry.

The Pirates found themselves in an unlikely position, ahead 3-1 in the eighth, but Tyler Yates immediately found himself in a jam by issuing a walk and single to open the inning. The right-hander went ahead 1-2 in the count to Ramirez, but the third baseman turned on a fastball and placed it past the third-base bag to score two for a 3-3 tie.

After Soto flied out, Fukudome singled up the middle to plate Ramirez for the go-ahead run.

"Last year, we played them close alot like this, although we have won some games against them," Theriot said. "We match up pretty decent against them. They always play us close and we definitely don't see them on the schedule and think we're going to win."
