National League Game Summary - Arizona at Florida

Final Score: Arizona 1 - Florida 3

Miami, FL (Sports Network) - Brandon Webb finally lost, outdueled by Ricky Nolasco in the Florida Marlins' 3-1 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.

Webb (9-1) pitched well enough to win, scattering six hits and three runs over seven frames with seven strikeouts and no walks. Unfortunately for him and the Diamondbacks, Nolasco (3-3) was even better, holding the struggling Arizona lineup to three hits and one run through seven innings, fanning seven and walking two.

The Diamondbacks managed only four hits on the night, after being held to two runs on six hits in the series opener, a 3-2 loss on Tuesday.

Webb had won all nine of his starts this season, and was trying to become the first pitcher since Andy Hawkins of the San Diego Padres in 1985 to win his first 10 starts. The streak ended at nine, however, still good for the longest in Diamondbacks history, and tied for third-longest in the majors since World War I.

"I'm not going to go 33 or 34-0, probably," said Webb. "You know it's going to happen some time. Losing in this manner, to a guy who pitched a great game, it's probably a good way to happen. We'll just go out in five days and trying to get to 10-1."

Luis Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a triple, a run batted in, and scored. Cody Ross homered for the Marlins, who had dropped five of six entering the series, but can sweep the three-game matchup of division leaders with a win on Thursday.

Stephen Drew's solo homer provided the lone run for Arizona, which has lost three of four.

The Marlins broke through for two runs in the fifth, using small ball and the long ball. Gonzalez golfed a triple to center with one out, and Matt Treanor perfectly executed a squeeze play, bunting down the first base line as Gonzalez broke from third. That tied the game at 1-1, then Ross untied it a few pitches later.

The Florida center fielder jumped all over a hanging sinker from Webb, sending it deep into the seats in left-center for a 2-1 Marlins edge.

"We were trying everything, squeezes, hit and runs, trying to make something happen," said Ross. "We executed well. Luckily I got a good pitch to hit, out over the plate, and I got enough wood on it. It's a big win for us, off a great pitcher. To get two in a row off the best team in baseball, it feels good."

Dan Uggla laced a leadoff ground-rule double to left in the seventh, and Gonzalez singled to center, plating Uggla with an insurance run.

For the second straight night the D-Backs failed to capitalize with runners on base in the eighth. Justin Upton and Eric Byrnes struck out with the bases loaded in Tuesday's loss.

On Wednesday night Matt Lindstrom worked out of trouble. With runners at the corners and one out after a single by Drew, Lindstrom rebounded to strike out Orlando Hudson and Conor Jackson, ending the threat.

Kevin Gregg pitched a perfect ninth, fanning two, for his ninth save.

A Drew single in the first was the only hit for Arizona until the shortstop stepped back in to lead off the fourth and tomahawked a high and inside fastball out to right for a 1-0 Arizona lead.

Coming back against Webb looked like a tall order for the Marlins, as the D- Backs ace retired the first 11 batters, until Jorge Cantu's two-out double in the fourth.
