National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Washington

Final Score: Philadelphia 1 - Washington 0

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Greg Dobbs didn't let a bad back keep him from waking up Philadelphia's listless offense, driving in Eric Bruntlett in the ninth frame with the club's only run in two games at new Nationals Park, but it was enough for a 1-0 victory over Washington.

Dobbs, who didn't start against right-hander Jason Bergmann because of back issues, was healthy enough to drop a pinch-hit single in front of Lastings Milledge in center.

"I was trying to get it to the outfield," Dobbs said of his approach. "I laid off the first two pitches, nasty pitches down in the zone. I got to 2-0. I got jammed, but I was lucky to get it out there."

The ninth-inning scoring chance began with Pedro Feliz, the regular third baseman again at the hot corner on Tuesday, clubbing a double into the left- field corner. A Carlos Ruiz bunt moved the pinch-runner Bruntlett to third, and Dobbs fought off a Jon Rauch (2-1) offering for the game-winning hit.

Nationals Park has played plenty big for the Phillies, who scored for the first time in this series after 17 innings of futility with runners in scoring position. Phillies hitters were 0-for-16 in that situation in this series before Dobbs' bloop hit found real estate.

Shane Victorino hit a gapper later in the frame, but Dobbs was gunned down at home after Jesus Flores blocked him from sweeping across the plate.

Elijah Dukes and pinch-hitter Rob Mackowiak each walked in the ninth, but Felipe Lopez grounded out with the tying run at third to end the game.

Cole Hamels received no run support for the second time this season against the Nationals. He lost a 1-0 decision in the second game of the season, but he threw blanks on Tuesday, striking out 11 with two walks and four hits allowed in seven innings. The gem came on the heels of his first career shutout against Atlanta, stretching his scoreless innings streak to 19 1/3.

Tom Gordon (4-2) registered the victory and Brad Lidge recorded his 11th save, stopping the team's three-game skid. The win was Philadelphia's first 1-0 victory since Brett Myers twirled a gem against Colorado in April 2006.

Bergmann was equally as good as Hamels, surrendering five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over seven frames. Cristian Guzman has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games after recording a pair of hits.

Hamels worked out of a jam in the fourth. Ryan Zimmerman was credited with a single on a hard-hit grounder that bounced off Feliz's glove in the hole at third. Dmitri Young then smoked a high breaking ball to center, and Milledge moved Zimmerman into scoring position with a fly out to right.

The southpaw used his out pitch to set up his fastball, striking out Flores with a fastball at the knees after a heavy dose of change-ups. Wily Mo Pena then fisted a fly ball to center to close the frame.

Washington's scouting thwarted a Phillies threat just before the seventh inning stretch. Feliz and Ruiz connected on back-to-back one-out singles in front of a Hamels bunt. Jimmy Rollins was intentionally walked, setting up a Bergman-Victorino matchup with the bases loaded.

Milledge shaded Victorino to the opposite field, and the outfielder smoked a line drive right at him to end the inning.

Hamels escaped a two-on, two-out jam in the bottom of the seventh, striking out Aaron Boone to end his night. Washington put two runners on base against Gordon in the eighth, but the right-hander retired Milledge with baserunners on first and second to stop the scoring chance.
