Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tom Glavine hurled six solid innings, and Brian McCann homered and drove in three runs as Atlanta downed the New York Mets, 6-1, in the first game of a day-night doubleheader at Turner Field.
Glavine (2-1), who spent the past five seasons with the Mets before returning to Atlanta, shut down his old mates, allowing just one run on three hits to pick up his 305th career win, tying Eddie Plank for 20th on the all-time MLB list.
Glavine combined with Will Ohman and Blaine Boyer to set down 22 consecutive Mets in the game before Jose Reyes' two-out single in the eighth.
"It's a little bit bigger deal than beating anybody else," Glavine said of beating his former club. "Any time you can beat your former team, it has a different feel to it but more importantly it's always important to win games in your own division."
Mark Teixeira, Yunel Escobar and Kelly Johnson each added an RBI apiece for the Braves, who have won three of their past four games. Teixeira finished the game 3-for-3.
Luis Castillo homered for the Mets, who were coming off a two-game sweep of the New York Yankees in interleague play.
"We hit some balls hard at people in the first inning," Mets star David Wright said. "After that (Glavine) settled down and hit his spots. He was in-an-out, up-and-down, changing speeds and kept us off balance."
John Maine (5-3), who was 4-0 with a 2.13 earned run average over his previous four starts, was touched for four runs on eight hits in four-plus innings en route to the loss.
Trailing by a run, Atlanta quickly evened things in the home-half of the first when Escobar led off with a double to right and came around on Teixeira's two-out run-scoring single.
The Braves took their first lead in the third after Chipper Jones, Teixeira and McCann came through with consecutive two-out singles.
Atlanta added another run in the fourth. Kelly Johnson doubled to center and Gregor Blanco walked before Glavine laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Escobar then lofted a sacrifice fly to right to make it a 3-1 game.
The Braves kept pulling away with a manufactured run in the fifth. Jones started things by drawing a walk and advanced to second on Teixeira's infield single. Mets manager Willie Randolph had seen enough of Maine by that point and summoned Scott Schoeneweis from the bullpen.
McCann bounced out to first, advancing both runners before Jeff Francoeur was intentionally walked to load the bases. Johnson then lifted a sac fly to left to put Atlanta on top 4-1.
McCann gave the Braves a five-run cushion in the seventh, 6-1, when he blasted a two-run homer, his eighth on the season, off Aaron Heilman.
The Mets jumped on top in the first when Castillo jerked a Glavine offering over the wall in left for a solo homer, his first of the year.
