Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Dan Uggla hit his first career grand slam and drove in five runs, while Andrew Miller hurled seven shutout innings as the red-hot Florida Marlins obliterated the Washington Nationals, 11-0, in the second of a three-game set at Nationals Park.
Cody Ross homered and scored three times for the Marlins, who are riding a six-game win streak. Wes Helms belted a solo shot, while Jeremy Hermida knocked in a pair of runs. Hanley Ramirez went 1-for-2, walked twice and scored twice as the Marlins needed just 10 hits to power their onslaught.
Miller (3-2) held the Nats to just two hits, tying a career high with seven strikeouts while issuing just one walk.
"I thought the name of the game today was Miller," Marlins manger Fredi Gonzalez said. "He was good. He was sharp and gave us seven innings."
Nationals starter Michael O'Connor (1-1) was bombarded for nine runs on six hits and six walks in 3 1/3 innings. Felipe Lopez went 2-for-4 as Washington lost for the fourth time in five games. Ryan Zimmerman had the only other hit for the Nats.
Leading 3-0, the Marlins put the game out of touch with seven runs in the top of the fourth.
Helms led off with a line drive homer that stayed just inside the foul pole in left. Matt Treanor followed with a double to center, then moved to third on Miller's sacrifice bunt. Ross worked another walk, and Hermida broke his bat but grounded a single into right to plate Treanor.
O'Connor walked Ramirez to load the bases, and was yanked for Joel Hanranhan, who's first pitch was in the dirt and kicked off Jesus Flores' shinguard, allowing Ross to dash home. Jorge Cantu drew a walk, then Uggla blew the game wide open with a grand slam that just cleared the wall in left to give Florida a 10-0 lead.
After allowing a two-out walk to Nick Johnson in the first, Miller set down 14 straight before Lopez looped a single that dropped just in front of a diving Gonzalez.
"I felt like I threw the really well tonight, a few too many balls early in the count, but I felt aggressive," Miller said. "Even when I was behind in the count I was able to get a good fastball or change-up. Overall, it was a postive start."
Hermida picked up his second RBI with a single in the eighth, while Taylor Tankersley and Matt Lindstrom each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to complete the shutout.
O'Connor struggled from the start, as Ross gave the Marlins the lead on the first pitch of the game, bashing a fastball deep into the seats in left.
A walk to Ross and a single by Ramirez put runners on first and second with one out in the third. Cantu walked to load the bases, and with Uggla at the plate, O'Connor uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Ross to score. Ramirez came in to score when Uggla drove a sacrifice fly to the wall in left-center, but Luis Gonzalez grounded out to first to end the threat.
