National League Game Summary - Cincinnati at New York (Game 1)

Final Score: Cincinnati 6 - NY Mets 12

Flushing, NY (Sports Network) - Carlos Beltran had a three-run triple and knocked in five, while Carlos Delgado and Brian Schneider hit solo homers as the New York Mets hammered the Cincinnati Reds, 12-6, in the first game of a day/night doubleheader at Shea Stadium.

Beltran finished 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored, while Moises Alou chipped in two hits and a pair of RBI for the Mets, who have won two straight and three of their last five. David Wright contributed with two hits and three runs scored.

Johan Santana (4-2) earned the win for the Mets, his first at Shea. The left- hander gave up three runs on 10 hits, while fanning five and walking a batter over six innings. Prior to the contest, Santana was 0-0 with a 6.14 ERA in two career appearances (one start) against Cincinnati.

"It's always good to win games," Santana said. Today, I didn't feel good and didn't have my best stuff. I was able to battle through. It was a team effort. The guys did a good job today. It's always good to see that."

Edwin Encarnacion had two hits with a homer and two RBI, while Ken Griffey Jr. drove in a pair for Cincinnati, which has dropped seven of its last nine.

Matt Belisle (1-3) went five innings, surrendering six runs -- five earned -- on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three.

With the game scoreless after an inning and a half, the Mets punched a run across in the second. Alou and Delgado led off the frame with singles, putting runners on first and second. Schneider then grounded into a force out, with Alou taking third. Santana followed by striking out, but the pitch sailed to the backstop and Alou crossed the plate, giving New York the early lead.

After the Reds were unable to take advantage of Freel's one-out double in the top of the third, the Mets tacked on three more in the home half. With runners on the corners and nobody out, Beltran lined a single up the middle to score Luis Castillo, who got things started with a walk. Two batters later Alou's bloop single brought in two more to put the Mets up 4-0.

Encarnacion's one-out solo homer to left in the fourth got Cincinnati on the board.

However, the Mets' offensive attack continued in the fifth. Beltran's sacrifice fly scored Castillo and Ryan Church followed with a run-scoring base hit, making it a 6-1 game.

Cincinnati got two back in the top of the sixth when RBI singles by Encarnacion and Scott Hatteberg got the Reds to within three.

New York then broke things open in the bottom of the sixth. Wright drew a bases-loaded walk and Beltran followed with three-run triple to give the home team a commanding 10-3 lead.

Joey Votto's RBI two-base hit in the top seventh got the Reds a little closer, but the Mets responded in the home half. Back-to-back homers by Delgado and Schneider put New York ahead 12-4.

"Matt (Belisle) was fairly sharp for the most part," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "But we gave them a couple runs, a wild pitch and an error at first base opened the gates. We hit some balls, we scored some runs, but we couldn't stop them from scoring."

Griffey Jr.'s two-run double in the eighth got Cincinnati to within six.

Jorge Sosa came on for the Mets in the top of the ninth and issued a walk to Votto, but settled down to get Encarnacion to ground into a double play, then got Jeff Keppinger to ground out softly to the catcher to end the game.
