American League Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Toronto

Final Score: Tampa Bay 2 - Toronto 6

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Shaun Marcum took a one-hitter into the ninth inning, and Scott Rolen sparked a late rally with a two-run homer, as Toronto downed Tampa Bay, 6-2, in the middle contest of a three-game set.

Marcum (4-2) was one out from completing the one-hit shutout, but ended up surrendering two runs on four total hits in 8 2/3 frames, with nine strikeouts.

Rolen also doubled, while Marco Scutaro finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and Rod Barajas added a pair of hits for Toronto, which has won six of seven.

Matt Garza (1-1) was solid in 6 2/3 innings for the Rays, as he gave up just one run on six hits, but took the loss. Scott Dohmann and Trever Miller gave up two runs apiece, while working just one-third of an inning.

"My job is to get as many outs as I can as fast as I can," Garza said. "My ball-to-strike ratio is not exactly what I want. But I got the outs when I had to."

B.J. Upton provided the Rays' offense with a two-run double, but Tampa Bay lost its fourth out of five.

After six scoreless innings, the Blue Jays added a run in the seventh when Scutaro singled home Aaron Hill. But the big blow came in the next frame, which began with Shannon Stewart's walk.

Rolen followed by lofting the ball over the fence in left-center, for a 3-0 lead. Miller came in to shut Toronto's offense down, and started to by striking out Matt Stairs, but a string of hits gave the Blue Jays an even larger lead.

Vernon Wells walked, and a Lyle Overbay double put both runners in scoring position. At that point, Jason Hammel was summoned, but Hill, Barajas and Scutaro put three consecutive singles through the infield to add three more runs, for a 6-0 Toronto lead.

Marcum came back out for the ninth, and got Gabe Gross and Jason Bartlett to ground out, with Rolen making the put-out on each.

But the Toronto starter's day then came to a halt, after Akinori Iwamura singled down the third-base line, and the speedy Carl Crawford reached base on a bouncing ball to second. Upton drove a double to deep center field, as the ball landed on the warning track, sending both runners home.

"It was fun to be out there. Guys played great defense behind me. Scored some runs there in the eighth," Marcum said. "Rod (Barajas) called a great game. With him back there, we were on the same page, kind of got into a nice little rhythm and just took it from there."

Scott Downs came in to get the final out, fanning Carlos Pena.

The starters battled early, with Marcum allowing one baserunner through the first six innings, and Garza spread out six over the same span.
