National League Game Summary - San Diego at Atlanta

Final Score: San Diego 3 - Atlanta 5

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Chipper Jones hit a two-run homer as the Atlanta Braves downed the San Diego Padres, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Turner Field.

Mark Kotsay went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two RBI and two runs scored for the Braves, who have won four straight. Jair Jurrjens (4-2) got the win as he gave up just one run on seven hits with a walk and eight strikeouts in six innings.

"I didn't think I had my fastball today," said Jurrjens. "I was having better luck with the changeup and my slider. I just tried to throw strikes."

Brain Giles went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and Adrian Gonzalez drove in two for the Padres, who have dropped four of five. Chris Young (2-3) was saddled with the loss as he gave up five runs on nine hits in five frames.

"We've struggled through the first five weeks of the season," said Giles. Obviously it's nice to do well, but when you struggle for this long it kind of takes away from having fun and winning baseball games."

The Padres got on the board in the first as Giles led off with a double and, two batters later, Gonzalez blasted a double to left for a 1-0 lead.

Atlanta responded in the second inning with two runs to take the lead. With one-out, Jeff Francoeur lined a double to left and Kotsay followed with a single to right to plate Francoeur. Gregor Blanco then punched a double to left to score Kotsay for a 2-1 lead.

In the third, Yunel Escobar led off with a single and Jones followed with a homer over the center field wall to make it a 4-1 Braves lead.

Kotsay led off the fourth inning with a home run into the right field stands to give Atlanta a 5-1 edge.

San Diego had runners at first and third in the fifth, but it was with two outs and Jim Edmonds popped out to end the frame.

The Padres, though, did make it a two-run game in the seventh. Will Ohman started on the mound and promptly gave up a single to Giles and then a triple to Tadahito Iguchi. Gonzalez then grounded out to score Iguchi.

That was as close as it got, though, as Jeff Bennett retired the final batter to pick up his first save of the season.
