American League Game Summary - Minnesota at Chicago

Final Score: Minnesota 1 - Chicago WSox 7

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Gavin Floyd took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, and Jermaine Dye homered and drove in a pair of runs to help the Chicago White Sox top Minnesota, 7-1, in the opener of a three-game set.

Floyd (3-1) tossed 8 1/3 innings and allowed an unearned run, walked three, struck out four, and give up one hit for the White Sox, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

Five Chicago players had two hits, including Carlos Quentin, who also had two RBI. Joe Crede and Juan Uribe each collected a pair of hits and an RBI.

Nick Blackburn (2-2) surrendered four runs -- three earned -- on six hits in six innings, and absorbed the loss as the Twins had a five-game win streak stopped.

Joe Mauer broke up Floyd's no-hitter in the ninth with a double, while Jason Kubel had the lone Minnesota RBI.

Floyd set the Twins down in order in the fifth through eighth innings, then started the ninth by catching Brendan Harris looking on a sweeping curveball on the outside corner for the first out.

But Mauer ripped the second pitch he saw to deep left-center, and the ball fell just a few feet in front of a diving Nick Swisher. White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen opted to then go to the bullpen with a six-run lead, and Bobby Jenks got the final two outs to end the game.

Floyd didn't look like he might complete a no-hitter early on, as he dealt a pair of one-out walks in the first inning -- though, a pair of ground outs bailed him out. The Chicago starter's only pitfall came in the fourth inning, when he walked Mauer to lead off the frame.

Justin Morneau then reached on a fielding error by left fielder Quentin, and Mauer later scored on a sacrifice fly by Kubel.

Meanwhile, Floyd's teammates added runs progressively starting in the first inning, which Orlando Cabrera led off with a walk. Quentin followed with a single, and after Blackburn induced two outs, Dye singled up the middle to bring around Cabrera.

Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez threw to third on the play, trying to get Quentin out. But the ball skipped by third base and Quentin started for home. The back-up at third threw to the catcher Mauer in time for the tag out, but Mauer couldn't hold onto the ball, and Chicago took a 2-0 lead.

Uribe singled with two outs in the bottom half of the fourth to score Dye and restore the White Sox's two-run cushion at 3-1. Dye's homer, a solo blast over the wall in right-center in the sixth, helped the White Sox start to tack on some insurance runs.

In the following inning, Uribe and Cabrera began the frame with singles, but a throwing error by third baseman Mike Lamb allowed the runners to advance to second and third.

Quentin delivered with a single to drive in both and push Chicago's lead to 6-1.

Eighth-inning doubles by A.J. Pierzynski and Crede added the final run for the White Sox.
