American League Game Summary - Cleveland at New York

Final Score: Cleveland 5 - NY Yankees 3

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - David Dellucci's three-run, pinch hit home run in the top of the eighth inning off Joba Chamberlain lifted Cleveland over New York, 5-3, in the opener of a three-game set at Yankee Stadium.

Jhonny Peralta added a two-run homer for the Indians, who snapped a two-game skid.

Fausto Carmona started on the hill and surrendered three runs on six hits and five walks, while fanning two in five innings. Rafael Perez (1-1) hurled two innings of scoreless relief to earn the win.

Jason Giambi was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs for the Yankees, who lost for the first time in four games. Hideki Matsui extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the first and finished 3-for-3 with a run scored.

Andy Pettitte allowed two runs on six hits in 6 1/3 innings. The veteran lefty walked just one and struck out six but was let down by an unlikely culprit in Chamberlain (1-2).

The second-year phenom gave up his first runs ever at Yankee Stadium and blew his first lead in the regular season.

"I don't care if I'm a rookie or in the league 10 years, it's going to happen to you," Chamberlain said. "It's just part of the game."

Trailing by a run, the Tribe took over as Chamberlain struggled with his command. The flame-thrower had walked Grady Sizemore and Peralta before Dellucci came to the plate as a pinch hitter for Franklin Gutierrez. The veteran turned on a fastball and deposited it over the right field wall for his 10th career pinch hit homer and a 5-3 Indians lead.

"He's our guy, he goes up there with confidence," Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said. "I think he likes being up there in those situations, we needed someone to step up with the way things have been going."

Jensen Lewis cruised through the bottom of the eighth for the Indians and Rafael Betancourt was perfect in the ninth to earn his third save of the year.

The Yankees took the early advantage with a run in the first. New York loaded the bases with one down when Derek Jeter and Matsui sandwiched a Bobby Abreu walk with singles. Giambi then grounded softly to first. Ryan Garko tried to initiate a 3-6-1 double play but the slow-footed Giambi just beat the return throw to first, enabling Jeter to score.

The Indians bounced back with a pair of runs thanks to Peralta's two-run homer in the fourth. Jamey Carroll got on with a one-out single to right before Peralta drilled a Pettitte offering over the wall in right-center for his sixth home run of the year.

New York answered quickly in the home-half. Matsui drew a leadoff walk and crossed the plate after Giambi sliced an RBI double to left-center. After Melky Cabrera chased Giambi to third with a grounder to the right side, Robinson Cano grounded an RBI single to left past a drawn in infield to make it a 3-2 game.

Things could have been worse for Cleveland, however. Cano was erased on Wilson Betemit's ground ball to second, but Jose Molina kept things going with a single up the middle before Johnny Damon sliced a ball to left-center that looked like it would find the gap. Sizemore made a diving catch to end the inning, likely keeping two more runs off the board.
