Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Tim Wakefield gave up two hits in eight shutout innings and the Boston Red Sox got back-to-back home runs from David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez to beat Detroit, 5-0, in the second installment of a four-game series.
Wakefield (3-1) retired 17 straight hitters after allowing a two-out Carlos Guillen single in the first, leading the Sox to victory. Wakefield allowed three base runners, one of which reached on an error by second baseman Dustin Pedroia. He struck out six and walked none as Boston won its fifth straight, while sending the Tigers to their fifth consecutive defeat.
The Red Sox used a three-run second inning and home runs from Ortiz and Ramirez in the seventh, making sure Wakefield's superb effort stood up.
"I felt really good coming out of the pen tonight," Wakefield said. "The starters take pride in going deep into games and giving the pen a rest. I had been working with John (Farrell) on my mechanics all week and that seemed to help. It seems that when I'm throwing the knuckler for strikes my other pitches are better, all my pitches were working."
Kevin Cash went 3-for-4 knocking in a run, getting the start for Jason Varitek at catcher. Kevin Youkilis slugged two doubles going 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Ramirez added two singles to go along with his seventh homer of the year.
Nate Robertson (1-4) allowed four runs on 10 hits, walked twos and fanned four. He has allowed four or more runs in each of his seven starts this season.
The Tigers managed only three hits in the game with a double from Ivan Rodriguez and singles from Curtis Granderson and Guillen, never moving a runner past second base.
"We're not doing well right now, but it's very important that we remember what we have and how good they are," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I'm not down on them, I support them 120 percent. We'll get going. I'll tolerate anything as long as we hustle. I will sink or swim with this team, 100 percent."
Boston finally put the game out of reach in the seventh when Ortiz deposited his seventh home run of the year deep into the right field bleachers, chasing the resilient Robertson from the game. The recently recalled Freddy Dolsi came on for Robertson and watched his very first major league pitch clear the center field wall courtesy of Ramirez's blast, moving him within three of the coveted 500 for his career.
The Red Sox had the leadoff man on base in four of the first six innings getting three runs in the second, but stranding nine in the contest, allowing Robertson to last through six and effectively keep the Tigers within striking distance until the seventh. Robertson allowed at least one base runner in each inning, but managed to get out of multiple jams with minimal damage.
The Sox started the second inning with their first four batters reaching base resulting in a quick three runs. Mike Lowell got things going by drawing a walk before Youkilis doubled down the left field line. J.D. Drew poked a single up the middle to score Lowell and move Youkilis to third. Cash followed with a double to left scoring Youkilis. Julio Lugo popped out to shallow right field for the first out and Coco Crisp grounded out scoring Drew to make it 3-0.
Mike Timlin came on in the ninth to retire the Tigers and help preserve Wakefield's gem.
