Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Richie Sexson and Wladimir Balentien hit home runs, as the Seattle Mariners snapped a five-game losing streak with a 7-3 win over the Texas Rangers in the opener of a four-game set from Safeco Field.
Jarrod Washburn (2-4) allowed three runs on four hits in six-plus innings for Seattle before leaving with tightness in his right calf.
"I know Washburn enjoyed pitching tonight," Seattle manager John McLaren said. "We got him some run support. He did a nice job. He's a great competitor and he demands a lot out of himself. He responded very nicely tonight."
Balentien drove in three runs, while Raul Ibanez doubled twice and knocked in a pair of runs. Jose Lopez went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Kevin Millwood (2-3) lasted only three innings, yielding seven runs on nine hits, including a pair of home runs. Millwood has now lost 10 consecutive decisions on the road dating to last season, a Texas club record, surpassing Don Stanhouse and Jamie Moyer. The right-hander's last road victory came on June 17, 2007 at Cincinnati. Millwood's streak also ties Joe McClain of the 1961-62 Senators for the franchise record.
"He didn't have his good stuff tonight and we all knew that," Texas catcher Gerald Laird said of Millwood. "He battled, but you aren't always going to go out there with your good stuff. He got through three innings, and these guys are good hitters and when you make mistakes, they're going to hurt you and that's what they did tonight."
Josh Rupe pitched four innings of one-hit ball in relief for Texas, which has dropped two straight after a season-high four-game winning streak. Milton Bradley had two RBI, while Michael Young finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
The Mariners jumped on Millwood for two runs in the first. Ichiro Suzuki led off with a double and Lopez followed with a single. Ibanez then lined a two- run double to center field.
Seattle added a run in the second on Lopez's RBI single and blew the game open with four runs in the third. Sexson stroked a solo shot to dead center. Jeff Clement walked, and with one out Kenji Johjima singled before Balentien clubbed a three-run homer over the wall in left.
Meanwhile, Washburn was masterful on the mound, allowing only one hit -- a two-out single by German Duran in the third -- through six innings, but encountered trouble in the seventh. The Rangers notched three consecutive hits to begin the frame. Young followed an infield single by Laird with a double that put runners in scoring position and Bradley brought them home with a double to center.
After Bradley's hit, the Mariners coaches and trainer ventured to the mound for a conference and Washburn informed them of the ailment. Sean Green replaced the southpaw and gave up a run on an RBI groundout to Brandon Boggs.
Green struck out the side in the eighth and J.J. Putz tossed a scoreless ninth.
