Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jamie Moyer was dazzling on the mound and the Philadelphia Phillies pounded out 17 hits en route to a convincing 11-4 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a four-game set from Chase Field.
Moyer (2-2), who is the oldest player in the majors at 45, allowed two runs on six hits and struck out five over a season-best seven innings to earn the win. The wily veteran helped his own cause, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in.
"In today's game four runs doesn't mean a whole lot," Moyer said. "It was nice to put a little bit of distance in the early to mid-part of the game, from there, we just kept adding on."
Geoff Jenkins and Carlos Ruiz each finished with three hits and an RBI, while Eric Bruntlett tripled and knocked in three runs for Philadelphia, which was coming off a 4-2 homestand. Chase Utley doubled twice and scored two runs. Ryan Howard also drove in a pair.
Max Scherzer (0-1), making his first major-league start, surrendered five runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and struck out five in four innings.
"I just didn't throw enough strikes," Scherzer said. "I fell behind hitters and fell behind in the count."
Arizona's first-round pick in 2006, Scherzer made his big league debut on Tuesday and was outstanding in relief. The right-hander pitched a perfect 4 1/3 innings, striking out seven batters and retiring all 13 hitters he faced. It was the longest debut in modern major league history by a pitcher who retired every batter he faced, while Scherzer's seven strikeouts were just one short of the modern record by a relief pitcher making his debut.
Chris Snyder homered and scored twice, while Stephen Drew added an RBI triple for the Diamondbacks, losers of two straight. Justin Upton and Chris Young both added a pair of hits.
The Phillies cashed in a run in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly by Howard, but Drew tied the game with an RBI triple in the bottom of the second.
Clutch two-out hitting was the theme in the third for Philadelphia. Utley lined a one-out double to right field and Howard drew a walk. Scherzer fanned Pat Burrell, but Jenkins brought Utley home with a single to center.
With Pedro Feliz at the plate, Scherzer uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Howard to advance to third. Howard then scored when Feliz hit a scorcher that deflected off the glove of Drew. Ruiz followed with an RBI single back through the middle and Moyer completed the barrage, hooking an RBI double down the left-field line to give the Phillies a 5-1 lead.
The Phillies busted the game open with four runs in the seventh. An intentional walk to Shane Victorino loaded the bases for Bruntlett, who provided the big blow with a two-out bases-clearing triple. Bruntlett later scored on a single by Howard.
Snyder clubbed a solo home run in the bottom half, but the Phillies got the run back in the next frame on Greg Dobbs' sac fly.
A fielding error by Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds in the ninth allowed Utley to score.
Arizona got two runs in the home half, but it was not nearly enough.
