Kansas City, MO (Sports Network) - Ervin Santana threw a four-hit shutout, while Garret Anderson and Brandon Wood hit back-to-back home runs as part of a four-run ninth inning to lead the Angels to a 4-0 win over the Kansas City Royals in the opener of a three-game series.
Santana (6-0) struck out nine and didn't issue a walk while needing only 97 pitches to notch the second shutout of his career. The first came May 23, 2005, when he blanked the White Sox in his second major league start.
"These guys (the Royals) have got a lot of young hitters and they've got a lot of got a lot of good hitters," said Angels manager Mike Scioscia. "(Santana) had to hit his spots and stay there all night, especially since (Royals starter Brett) Tomko was throwing the ball great."
Santana joined teammate Joe Saunders at 6-0, making them the first set of teammates to start with that mark since Pedro Martinez and John Burkett accomplished the feat with Boston in 2002.
Anderson hit a two-run homer and Wood had his first homer of the year for the Angels, winners of three straight. Casey Kotchman knocked in the eventual winning run with a single, and Erick Aybar went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored for Los Angeles.
Ramon Ramirez (0-1) took the loss after allowing a run over 1 1/3 innings in relief of Brett Tomko, who struck out seven and allowed just two hits in seven innings. Jimmy Gobble allowed a run without recording an out, while Joel Peralta yielded the homers to Anderson and Wood in two-thirds of an inning.
"(Santana's) been great all year," Tomko said. "I think going into the game I wasn't really concerned with him. It was more on a personal level. I've had a rough three starts and I was trying to get back on track and right the ship."
Mark Grudzielanek had two hits for Kansas City, which had a two-game win streak snapped.
Aybar finally gave the Angels a spark, ripping a line drive to the gap in right and sprinting around the bases for a triple to start the ninth. With the infield drawn in, Vladimir Guerrero chopped out to third, and Ramirez was lifted for Gobble. Kotchman lined Gobble's first pitch to center for a single that plated Aybar for the first run of the game.
Peralta came in and got Torii Hunter on a fly ball, but Anderson launched a 1-0 fastball into the right field bullpen. Wood then clubbed a homer to the bullpen in left before Sean Rodriguez was retired to end the four-run burst.
Santana allowed a one-out single to Grudzielanek in the bottom of the ninth, but got Alex Gordon on a fly ball and struck out Jose Guillen to end it.
Tomko dominated the Angels through seven innings, holding them to singles by Aybar and Guerrero before giving way to Ramirez in the eighth. Ramirez worked around a two-out infield single by Jeff Mathis to keep the Angels off the board, but Santana responded with a perfect bottom half to send the game into the ninth scoreless.
