Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Roy Halladay tossed 7 1/3 strong innings and struck out a season-high seven batters, as the Toronto Blue Jays overcame a solid performance from the White Sox's Jose Contreras to clip Chicago, 4-3, in the third of a four-game set at Rogers Centre.
Halladay (3-4), with the exception of the fourth inning, was flawless on the mound. The right-hander, who had tossed four straight complete games, allowed three runs on three hits in the aforementioned frame, but retired the White Sox in order in the other six innings before he was lifted with one out in the eighth.
"We're starting to score runs when we need to and we've been pitching pretty well," Halladay said.
Matt Stairs doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored a pair of runs for the Blue Jays, who have reeled off four straight wins. Vernon Wells added an RBI single in the win.
Contreras (2-3) gave up four runs on six hits and fanned five in a complete game effort for the White Sox, who have lost a season-high five in a row. Paul Konerko had an RBI double for Chicago, which was limited to four hits.
"He did well, he just came into a couple of rough spots out there," Chicago's Joe Crede stated about Contreras. "He left a couple of balls up and they were able to capitalize on it. It's just the way the game goes. He'll keep his head up and he'll go out and be great for us again next time."
The Blue Jays took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Lyle Overbay and put up three runs in the third inning. Stairs laced a two- out, two-run double off the base of the wall in center field and scored on a broken-bat single by Wells.
Meanwhile, Halladay was perfect the first time through the lineup, but the White Sox roughed up the right-hander for three runs in the top of the fourth. Nick Swisher led off with a ground-rule double and Orlando Cabrera reached when David Eckstein's throw pulled Overbay off the bag at first. Jim Thome then drove in a run with a single and Konerko followed with a run-scoring double. Chicago plated another run on an RBI groundout by A.J. Pierzynski.
The game then turned into a pitcher's duel. Following the double by Konerko, Halladay sat down 13 of the next 14 batters he faced, while Contreras found a groove of his own and retired the final 16 batters he faced after Wells' knock in the third.
Jesse Carlson replaced Halladay in the eighth and yielded a two-out double to Cabrera, but struck out Thome to end the inning. Jeremy Accardo got Konerko and Jermaine Dye to fly out in the ninth. Scott Downs was then brought out to face Pierzynski and he induced a game-ending groundout to notch his third save of the season.
