Boston, MA (Sports Network) - David Ortiz went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in, as the Boston Red Sox rolled to a 12-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.
Dustin Pedroia finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and double for Boston, which hit seven doubles as a team, but no other extra-base hits. Manny Ramirez ended with two RBI, one hit and two walks for the Red Sox, who have won two in a row and four of five.
Josh Beckett (3-2) was solid in eight innings of work, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk, while fanning five.
"I think it's our time right now to do what we're supposed to do and that's go out and throwing innings and not tax our bullpen like we did early in the year," Beckett said.
Gabe Gross and Akinori Iwamura each homered for Tampa Bay, which has lost two in a row, while Dioner Navarro added two hits.
Rays starter James Shields (3-2) was roughed up in 3 2/3 innings, as he surrendered seven runs on 10 hits.
"[Shields] just wasn't comfortable," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "He just didn't appear to be. That would be the best word. From the side, you look at the velocity readings, they were normal, but [not] overall command."
In a back-and-forth game early on, Boston surged ahead with a pair of runs each in the fourth and sixth innings.
Tampa Bay had trimmed the Red Sox lead to 5-3 in the top half of the fourth, but the home team started their half-inning off with consecutive doubles from Pedroia and Ortiz for one run.
Later, Kevin Youkilis and J.D. Drew worked walks with two outs, and J.P. Howell -- who entered the game for relief -- hit Jason Varitek with a pitch to force in a run, and push Boston's lead to 7-3.
In the sixth inning, Ramirez walked and Mike Lowell doubled to put both in scoring position. A Youkilis single brought in Ramirez, and Drew grounded into a fielder's choice to allow Lowell to run home, and the Red Sox led 9-3.
Iwamura blasted the ball just over the Green Monster in the eighth inning, but it was a solo shot, and the Red Sox tacked on three more runs to put the game out of reach. Drew roped an RBI double to right in the eighth, and Varitek hit a two-RBI single to account for the final margin.
In the first inning, Jacoby Ellsbury and Pedroia led off with consecutive singles. Ortiz followed with a double for one RBI, Ramirez singled to center to clear the bases, and the Red Sox led 3-0 before Shields got a single out -- though, the Tampa Bay starter worked out of the inning from there.
In the second inning, the Rays got on the board thanks to a two-run homer from Gross, his first since going to Tampa Bay from Milwaukee in a trade.
A Pedroia RBI single in the home half restored Boston's two-run edge, and a Julio Lugo double in the third pushed Drew home for a 5-2 Red Sox lead.
Eric Hinske led off the fourth with a double, and Carlos Pena followed with a single to start a prospective Rays rally. Evan Longoria singled to drive in Hinske, and later, Gross walked with one out to load the bases.
But the half-inning ended when Nathan Haynes flied out to left and Pena tried to tag. Ramirez made a perfect throw, and Pena, who was slightly lethargic coming off of third base, was out by several yards.
