Boston, MA (Sports Network) - A.J. Burnett scattered three hits over 7 2/3 shutout innings as Toronto topped Boston, 3-0, in the final contest of a three-game set from Fenway Park.
Burnett (3-2) fanned five but walked five to record his second victory in three starts.
"My fastball was going everywhere tonight, which is a good thing," Burnett said. "We came out, hit the ball, scored some runs, just a good 'W' for us to get back on track."
Alex Rios finished 3-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored for the Blue Jays, who salvaged a game in the series and won for just the second time in their last 10 games.
David Ortiz had a pair of hits for the Red Sox, whose two-game win streak was halted. Boston has dropped six of its last eight.
Tim Wakefield (2-1) allowed six hits and three runs over seven innings in defeat, walking four without recording a strikeout.
"I thought Wake was fighting it all night," said Sox manager Terry Francona. "He wasn't commanding his fastball, not that he throws it a lot, but you could see even when he threw it, it wasn't in the strike zone."
Rios led off the seventh by drilling a knuckleball over the Green Monster to give the Jays a three-run cushion, and Burnett retired the final five batters he faced in order before departing with two down in the eighth.
Jesse Carlson finished the frame by inducing Ortiz into a fly out to right, then Ryan hurled a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.
The inning was not without controversy, as Ryan was called for a balk on what would have been the game-ending fly out from Coco Crisp, sending Brandon Moss, who had walked, to second. Crisp later singled, moving Moss to third. However, Ryan rebounded to strike out Jed Lowrie looking to end the game.
"The call was made and I probably didn't stop," Ryan stated. "You try to stay in the moment out there and you can only control the things you can control out there. He made the call and stuck by it so it's my job to go back out there and keep some composure and finish the inning."
Toronto pushed across a run in the third as Rios singled with one out, stole second and scored when Scott Rolen dumped a single to right.
David Eckstein led off the fifth with a double, then Rolen drew a walk. A single by Matt Stairs off the scoreboard in left resulted in Eckstein being caught in a rundown and tagged out at the plate, but Rolen made it to third and Stairs moved up to second. Vernon Wells' sacrifice fly to center then plated Rolen for a 2-0 game.
The Sox had runners at first and second with one out in the home sixth after Ortiz singled and Ramirez walked, but Burnett was rescued as Moss lined into an inning-ending double play.
