Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Joe Crede belted a grand slam to punctuate a five-run seventh inning as the Chicago White Sox rallied to top the Minnesota Twins, 7-4, in Chicago's home opener at U.S. Cellular Field.
Crede went 2-for-4 and scored two runs for the White Sox, who picked up their fifth straight win. Jermaine Dye was 2-for-4 with a run batted in, while Nick Swisher doubled, drove in a run and scored once.
"Since I've been here as a manager the one guy that I want up at the plate with the game on the line is Joe Crede," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "He comes through all the time for us."
Javier Vazquez (1-1) rebounded from a shaky start to pitch seven solid innings, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Bobby Jenks earned his fourth save with a scoreless ninth.
Mike Lamb doubled twice and drove in two runs for the Twins, who lost their second in a row. Joe Mauer and Delmon Young had an RBI each, while Denard Span picked up his first big league hit and scored a run.
Matt Guerrier (0-1) allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings and picked up the loss in relief of starter Nick Blackburn, who surrendered two runs on seven hits over five innings.
Down 3-2, the White Sox rallied against Guerrier, who was in his second inning in relief of Blackburn. With one out, Jim Thome earned a walk and Paul Konerko laced a single to center to put runners on first and third and chase Guerrier in favor of Pat Neshek.
Dye singled, scoring Thome and tying the game. A.J. Pierzynski struck out and Carlos Quentin singled, loading the bases for Crede, who hit a 1-0 fastball just over the wall down the left field line to give the White Sox their first lead of the game, 7-3.
"I really didn't think I had enough of it to hit it out," Crede said. "I hit it high enough, but I know with the bat having broken in my hands, I thought it was going to be an out."
Span drew a walk off Scott Linebrink in the eighth and came around to score on a Young single, but the Twins could get no closer.
Jenks allowed a one-out single in the ninth to pinch-hitter Matt Tolbert, but induced Carlos Gomez into a game-ending double play to lock up the save.
Gomez's speed allowed the Twins to hit the board in the first inning. He led off the game with a bunt single, stole second and advanced to third on Span's groundout. Mauer followed by lacing an RBI single to right.
Chicago got the run back in the home half of the inning. Swisher led off the frame by clubbing a double to the gap in right, then advanced to third on a soft single by Orlando Cabrera and scored on Thome's broken-bat hit.
Minnesota tacked on another run in the second, as Jason Kubel started the inning with a single. Brendan Harris bunted Kubel over to second, and Lamb brought in the run with a line drive double down the left field line.
Back-to-back doubles to the power alley in right by Harris and Lamb with one out in the fourth gave the Twins a 3-1 edge.
Crede doubled to deep center to lead off the home fourth. Juan Uribe's single sent Crede to third, and Swisher grounded into a force play to drive the run home.
Vazquez settled down after the fourth, keeping Minnesota off the board in his final three innings.
