Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Torii Hunter's grand slam, just inside the left field pole with one out in the ninth inning, catapulted the Angels to an improbable 6-4 win over the Cleveland Indians.
Hunter, who also homered in the eighth inning, went 3-for-5 with five RBI, as Los Angeles pulled out the victory despite surrendering three runs in the top of the ninth. Vladimir Guerrero had two hits and scored for the Angels, who have won five of their last seven games since beginning the campaign with a loss at Minnesota.
Joe Saunders allowed just one run over eight solid innings for the Angels, but Francisco Rodriguez blew the save in the ninth and then departed the mound with a limp in favor of Scot Shields (1-0).
Fausto Carmona gave up four hits and an unearned run over the first six innings for the Indians, losers in four of their last five contests. Joe Borowski (0-1) walked two batters in the ninth and gave up Hunter's homer.
Jhonny Peralta homered and knocked in two runs for Cleveland.
Hunter's lead-off homer to left field off Rafael Betancourt in the eighth inning gave the Angels a 2-1 lead, but the Indians went ahead with a big top of the ninth.
Travis Hafner walked and Victor Martinez doubled to right, and when Guerrero misplayed the carom off the wall down the line, pinch-runner Asdrubal Cabrera scored. Jhonny Peralta then doubled in pinch-runner David Dellucci. Ryan Garko walked, and then Shields replaced Rodriguez.
The rally continued for the Indians though, as Franklin Gutierrez and Casey Blake singled for a 4-2 margin. Jamey Carroll walked to load the bases, but Shields got two big outs, fanning Grady Sizemore and getting Jason Michaels to ground out.
Gary Matthews Jr. walked with one out in the bottom of the ninth, and then Guerrero singled to left. Garret Anderson walked before Hunter clubbed a 1-0 slider over the wall for his 10th career grand slam - his biggest hit since being acquired in the offseason.
Peralta homered to left to start the fourth inning, but the Angels tied it in the sixth when Casey Kotchman scored on a throwing error by Blake.
