American League Game Summary - Seattle at Baltimore

Final Score: Seattle 2 - Baltimore 3

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Luis Hernandez's single to the right-center gap plated Jay Payton with the game-winning run, capping a three-run rally in the ninth inning as the Orioles came back to down the Seattle Mariners, 3-2.

Luke Scott went 3-for-4 for the Orioles, who have won four straight after losing their season opener. Nick Markakis went 2-for-3 with a key double in the ninth-inning rally, which made a winner out of Dennis Sarfate (1-0), who tossed the scoreless ninth for Baltimore. Jeremy Guthrie started for the Orioles and let up two runs on six hits in seven innings, with two strikeouts and two walks.

The ninth-inning meltdown by Eric O'Flaherty and Mark Lowe ruined a dominant performance by Felix Hernandez, who threw eight shutout innings, scattering five hits while fanning six and walking two. Lowe (0-1) gave up two hits and a run without recording an out for Mariners, who have dropped the first three of this four-game set.

Raul Ibanez went 3-for-4 and homered for Seattle, and Richie Sexson hit an RBI double.

With All-Star closer J.J. Putz sidelined with a ribcage injury, Seattle turned to O'Flaherty to hold down a 2-0 lead in the ninth. Markakis roped a leadoff double to left, and moved to third on Kevin Millar's ground out to short. Aubrey Huff then grounded out to second, plating Markakis with Baltimore's first run, but the O's were down to their last out.

O'Flaherty couldn't get that last out, though, as Scott pulled a ground single into right, and Lowe came on for Seattle. Payton poked a single to right, putting runners at the corners with two outs. Lowe then walked Ramon Hernandez, and ball four skipped in the dirt past catcher Jamie Burke, allowing pinch-runner Adam Jones to score the tying run.

Retiring Luis Hernandez would have sent the game to extra innings, but the shortstop lifted a fly ball in the gap in the right-center, plating Payton with the game-winning run as the Orioles dugout emptied.

The Mariners jumped on top in the third. After an Ibanez double play moved Ichiro Suzuki to third, Sexson came through with a two-out double to left, and the Mariners led 1-0.

Ibanez made up for grounding into the double play on his next at-bat, when he ripped a line-drive homer to right-center to lead off the sixth.

Felix Hernandez, meanwhile, cruised through eight innings. The Seattle pitcher walked two in the sixth, but got out of that jam on a line-out to short by Kevin Millar. Scott laced a one-out double to right in the seventh, but Payton grounded out, and Hernandez fanned pinch-hitter Scott Moore to end the inning.
