Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - Ben Sheets twirled a five-hitter for his second career shutout and Ryan Braun drove in three runs, as the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants with a 7-0 victory at Miller Park.
Sheets (1-0) did not walk a batter and struck out eight to earn his first shutout since May 29, 2001 against St. Louis. He threw 78 of his 109 pitches for strikes, limiting San Francisco to three singles and a pair of doubles.
"(Sheets) looked about as dominant as he could be today," Brewers manager Ned Yost said. "That's Sheets out there at his finest. Right from the beginning, he was down with his fastball. When he's got both going [fastball and curve], he's tough to face."
Braun finished 3-for-5 with a double and a homer. Gabe Kapler also homered and drove in two runs for Milwaukee, which has won five of six to start the season.
Barry Zito (0-2) worked five innings for San Francisco and took the loss, yielding five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits with two walks and three strikeouts.
"The results weren't what I wanted, but I threw better pitches consistently and got ahead consistently," Zito said. "I'm encouraged."
"The first three or four innings, there were only a couple of decent balls hit off him," Giants manager Bruce Bochy added. "I thought he had good stuff today. Everything was crisp."
The Giants concluded a season-opening road trip 1-5 and will play their home opener on Monday against San Diego. San Francisco was blanked twice during the trip and managed just 12 runs in the six games.
Sheets struck out the side to start the game, then yielded a pair of two-out singles before fanning Brian Bocock in the second.
Milwaukee picked up an unearned run in the home second when Corey Hart reached on an error by Bocock at shortstop and raced home on J.J. Hardy's double. Hardy was thrown out at third on the play.
Another miscue enabled the Brewers to score again in the third. Jason Kendall reached on a throwing error by third baseman Jose Castillo, then advanced to third on a single by Rickie Weeks before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Kapler.
Castillo doubled with one out in the fourth, but Sheets retired the next two batters to keep him there and the Brewers struck for another run in the bottom of the inning. After singles by Bill Hall and Hart, Hardy drew a walk to load the bases. Sheets hit into a force out at the plate, but Kendall knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.
The Brewers tacked on two more in the fifth, as Kapler led off with his second homer of the season and Braun connected for his second with one out to make it 5-0.
Braun doubled home Prince Fielder in the seventh and added a run-scoring single in the eighth for the final margin.
"I don't know who Sheets wouldn't have shut out today," Bochy said. "He's one of the best in the league."
