National League Game Summary - Philadelphia at Cincinnati

Final Score: Philadelphia 2 - Cincinnati 8

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Edinson Volquez shone in his National League debut, tossing 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one run on five hits while walking two and notching a career-high eight strikeouts, guiding the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-2 thrashing of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Volquez (1-0) earned the first win of his Reds career after coming over from Texas in the offseason as part of the deal that sent Josh Hamilton to the Rangers.

He was helped by a scorching Cincinnati offense, led by Jeff Keppinger, who finished 3-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored three and knocked in. Ken Griffey, Jr. drilled a two-run dinger and crossed the plate twice while Corey Patterson added an RBI double.

The typically potent Phillies lineup was held in check, as only Chase Utley and Pat Burrell collected multiple hits, each ending with a pair. Utley doubled and scored, and Burrell drove in a run, as did Jimmy Rollins.

Brett Myers (0-1) was roughed up in his second start of the campaign, lasting only five innings while surrendering four runs on eight hits, two of them homers, and walking three while and fanning four. He was relieved by Clay Condrey, who allowed four runs on four hits in just two innings of work.

The lone bright spot for the Phillies on Sunday may have been Brad Lidge, who hurled a perfect inning in his season debut after being activated off the 15- day disabled list on Saturday. Lidge, who was acquired in an offseason trade with Houston, was sidelined on March 24 while recovering from right knee surgery performed in February.

The Reds doubled their offensive output with a huge sixth inning that put the game out of reach. Condrey was brought in to start the stanza, and he wasted no time getting into trouble. He issued a free pass to Scott Hatteberg, committed an error on Patterson's dribbler to the right side of the infield, and uncorked a wild pitch that advanced the runners to second and third with no outs.

Condrey served a two-run double to Keppinger that put Cincy ahead 6-1. After Griffey was intentionally walked and Brandon Phillips reached on an infield single, the bases were loaded for Adam Dunn, who knocked in Keppinger with a base hit to center. Encarnacion then grounded into a double play, but Griffey was able to score, making it 8-1.

Philly added a run in the eighth when Burrell singled home Utley.

The Reds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at-bat when Griffey sat back on a knee-high off-speed offering and sent it soaring deep into the right field seats. The homer brought around Keppinger, who had singled to right in the preceding at-bat, and marked the 594th homer of Griffey's remarkable career.

In the third, after falling behind in the count to Keppinger, 3-1, Myers hung a fastball over the heart of the plate, and it was promptly blasted over the fence in left field, extending Cincy's advantage to 3-0.

The Reds continued to pile it on in the fourth. After Paul Bako walked with one down, Volquez bunted him ahead to second, and Patterson followed by smoking a breaking ball into the right-center field gap. Bako scored easily, and Cincinnati went on top by four.

Philadelphia finally got on the board in the fifth. Carlos Ruiz led off with a double, and Myers laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved him to third. Rollins then grounded out to first base, allowing Ruiz to cross the plate.
