Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Alex Gordon drove in a pair of runs, and Brett Tomko hurled five shutout innings as Kansas City avoided a sweep by besting Minnesota, 3-1, in the finale of a three-game set at the Metrodome.
Gordon finished 2-for-4 with a two-run single for the Royals, who are 4-2 on the young season. Billy Butler finished 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a run scored, while John Buck was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Tomko (1-0) allowed six hits while walking one and striking out three in the game and left with a 2-0 lead. Ron Mahay, Leo Nunez and Jimmy Gobble protected the lead until Joakim Soria closed things out by striking out the side in the ninth to earn his third save of the year.
"We really needed to win this game," Gobble said. "Going home 4-2 is huge so it was imperative we got this one."
Justin Morneau's solo homer was the only offense for the Twins. Boof Bonser (0-2) pitched well in defeat, surrendering three runs on eight hits in seven innings of work.
"We had some chances and got into the bullpen," Morneau said. "That's exactly what you try and do but we just couldn't sustain anything."
The Royals jumped on top with a pair of runs in the second. Jose Guillen led off the inning with a single up the middle before being chased to third on Butler's double to right. Gordon then drove both runners in with a single to left.
The Twins finally broke through off Mahay in the sixth when Morneau blasted a two-out solo home run, his second of the year, to make it 2-1.
Kansas City got that run back in the seventh. Gordon led off with a double and moved to third on a Bonser balk before Buck drove him in with a one-out single.
