American League Game Summary - Tampa Bay at New York

Final Score: Tampa Bay 6 - NY Yankees 3

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Jonny Gomes homered and drove in four runs, while Edwin Jackson put together a solid performance on the mound, as the Tampa Bay Rays doubled up the New York Yankees, 6-3, in the second game of a four-game set at Yankee Stadium.

Gomes recorded his first home run of the season and added a sacrifice fly, while Willy Aybar hit a solo shot for the Rays. Jackson (1-0) gave up one run on five hits over six innings, and Troy Percival tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his first save of the season.

"I thought Jackson was good," Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said. "He had a really good slider, mixed in the change up a little. He was making some pretty good pitches."

Andy Pettitte (0-1), who had been bothered by lower back spasms, was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the game and was less than stellar in five innings of work for New York. The veteran left-hander surrendered five runs -- three earned -- on eight hits, striking out three and walking two. Pettitte entered the game with a 13-2 record and a 3.53 earned run average in 20 lifetime starts against Tampa Bay.

Pettitte is coming off a tumultuous offseason in which he was named in the Mitchell Report and admitted to taking human growth hormones on a few occasions. Pettitte also confirmed to Congress that he and Roger Clemens had in fact discussed the seven-time Cy Young Award winner's use of performance enhancing drugs.

Despite the circumstances, the fans greeted Pettitte with a chorus of cheers.

Jorge Posada finished 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Alex Rodriguez added two hits.

"He pitched well," New York's Derek Jeter said about Jackson. "He had a good slider. He pitched probably as well as we've seen him."

The Yankees jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by Rodriguez that knocked in Johnny Damon, who lead off the frame with a walk.

Tampa Bay put up a two-spot in the third inning. After Akinori Iwamura singled to begin the frame, Shelley Duncan's throwing error on a grounder from Carl Crawford allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Carlos Pena then walked to load the bases, but Pettitte managed to get Upton to ground into a force out at second, plating Iwamura.

Gomes hit a sacrifice fly to Damon, which allowed Crawford to score, and Upton, who stole second earlier in the at-bat, to move up to third, where he was stranded after an inning-ending ground out by Jason Bartlett.

Gomes clubbed a three-run homer over the left-field wall to give the Rays a 5-1 lead in the fifth.

After Aybar stroked a line drive home run to right field in the eighth, the Yankees countered with a pair of runs in the bottom-half. Three straight singes by Bobby Abreu, Rodriguez and Wilson Betemit loaded the bases, but Trever Miller fanned Robinson Cano for the first out of the inning. The next batter was Posada, and he laced a single to center that scored Abreu and Rodriguez.

In the ninth, Percival retired Damon on a fly out to center, Jeter on a pop up to second and Abreu on strikes to preserve the victory.
