Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Kosuke Fukudome's two-run double highlighted a five-run seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs woke their slumbering bats with a 9-7 victory over the Houston Astros at Wrigley Field.
"The fans in the stands got up and cheered for me," said Fukudome. "It really feels good. It does give me a little charge, a little more boost."
Chicago had scored three runs or less in three of its first four games of the season and just 14 overall during its 1-3 start. That changed Saturday, as manager Lou Piniella fiddled with a lineup that suddenly pounded out 16 hits. Derrek Lee led the way with a 4-for-4 effort, including a solo homer. He also drove in a pair and scored three runs, while Reed Johnson, who had been moved to the second hole, added two hits and knocked in two.
Kevin Hart (1-0) picked up the win with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, after Jason Marquis yielded five runs -- four earned -- on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in the start.
Carlos Lee went 3-for-4 with a solo homer for Houston, which has dropped four of six to open the season. Michael Bourn, Ty Wigginton and Darin Erstad each chipped in two hits apiece.
Roy Oswalt (0-2) was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- and 10 hits over 6 2/3 innings for the Astros. The three-time All-Star, who was coming off an unsuccessful season debut, threw 59 of his 92 pitches for strikes.
Trailing 5-2 in the sixth, the Cubs offense kicked into gear. Derrek Lee doubled, moved to third on a bunt single by Fukudome and scored on a passed ball to make it a two-run game.
Chicago then put up a five spot in the seventh. Ryan Theriot walked and later scored on Johnson's groundout, while Derrek Lee followed with a single to bring home Mike Fontenot, who had reached base in a pinch-hit appearance.
The Astros called on Oscar Villarreal to limit the damage, but he walked Aramis Ramirez before Wesley Wright was quickly summoned. Fukudome promptly doubled, bringing home two, and Geoff Geary became Houston's fourth pitcher of the afternoon. Fukudome advanced to third to on a balk, and Mark DeRosa's double to the gap in right-center made it 8-5.
"(Fukudome) has been our spark," said Derrek Lee. "He's been there everyday for us. The crowd is feeding off it, we're feeding off it. He really has an approach which is impressive, especially since he has never seen these pitchers. He's just a professional hitter."
The visitors made it a one-run game in the eighth, as Erstad and Carlos Lee ripped a single and double, respectively, to open the inning. Erstad scored on Miguel Tejada's groundout, and a single by pinch-hitter Geoff Blum trimmed the deficit to 8-7.
Houston's bats were silenced the rest of the way, though, and Chicago picked up an insurance run in the eighth on Johnson's RBI single to left. Kerry Wood then nailed down the save, retiring the side in order.
Houston broke through for a first-inning run, as Bourn ripped a leadoff hit to center and later scored on a double-play grounder. The second frame started in similar fashion, as Tejada worked a leadoff walk. Back-to-back singles by Wigginton and Mark Loretta then made it 2-0.
Chicago got one back in the home half, as Geovany Soto tripled and later scored on a double by Marquis.
Derrek Lee's solo shot with one out in the third made it a 2-2 game, but Carlos Lee answered with a leadoff homer in the top of the fourth to put Houston back on top.
The Astros tacked on a pair of runs in the sixth, as Hunter Pence reached on Derrek Lee's fielding error, stole second, and crossed the plate on a double by Erstad.
