Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - Mark Ellis went 2-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and a pair of runs scored as Oakland breezed by Cleveland, 6-1, in the second installment of three from McAfee Coliseum.
Jack Cust drove in two with a double for the Athletics, who have won the first two games of the series. Emil Brown collected two hits, knocked in a run and scored once for Oakland.
Dana Eveland (1-0) earned his first career victory as a starter, going seven innings while scattering six hits and one run. He tied a career-best by fanning seven with just one walk.
"It feels like I've been getting anxious for a while," Eveland said of waiting for his turn. "Finally I get my opportunity. It was nice to finally get on the mound and pitch for real when it counts."
Travis Hafner drove in the lone run for the Indians, who have dropped three in a row and have suffered offensively without catcher Victor Martinez, sidelined with a hamstring injury.
"It's obviously a different lineup. But you're going to have a player down and everyone needs to pick up the slack," said Indians manager Eric Wedge. "You can't wait for him to come back. Everyone has to step up. What I'm concerned about is the quality of our at-bats."
C.C. Sabathia (0-1) took the loss after allowing six hits and four runs over 5 1/3 frames. The burly hurler fell to 1-4 with a 7.12 earned-run average against the A's in Oakland.
Hafner stroked an RBI double to put the Tribe ahead in the first, but Oakland countered with three in the home half. Daric Barton tripled with one out and scored on Brown's single. Mike Sweeney was plunked, and after Bobby Crosby popped out, Cust's double to left plated two more.
Eveland worked out of a jam in the third, as Cleveland had two men on with two out after Grady Sizemore singled and Jason Michaels walked. He recovered and got Hafner to swing under a pitch and fly out to left to halt the threat.
Oakland went up 4-1 in the fifth on an Ellis solo homer, which snapped an 0- for-18 streak.
The A's put the game away for good in the eighth. Kurt Suzuki led off with a single and moved up a base on Jack Hannahan's base hit. Chris Denorfia advanced both runners with a sacrifice, then Ellis laced a ball up the middle to score Suzuki and Hannahan for a 6-1 edge.
Andrew Brown finished the contest by retiring the side in order.
