American League Game Summary - Chicago at Detroit

Final Score: Chicago WSox 5 - Detroit 3

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Jermaine Dye homered and the White Sox used a four-run sixth inning to keep the Tigers out of the win column with a 5-3 victory at Comerica Park.

Dye crossed the plate twice, and Jim Thome provided the White Sox' first hit of the game with an RBI double in Chicago's pivotal sixth inning. The White Sox tallied just three hits, but drew eight walks. Gavin Floyd (1-0) picked up the win after allowing three runs on six hits and two walks through six innings on the hill.

Dontrelle Willis took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but battled control problems the whole way, as Detroit remained the lone winless team in the majors. Making his American League debut, Willis walked seven batters and allowed three runs in five-plus innings of work. He only allowed one hit and did not factor in the decision. Zach Miner (0-1) took the loss after allowing one unearned run in the sixth inning.

"I don't think they're (the team) pressing to get a win but I think they're anxious to get one," Tigers' manager Jim Leyland said. "To me, there's a difference. I'd be shocked if they're feeling a lot of pressure. This team, most of them were in a World Series two years ago. But anxious, I definitely think that. We all are. So am I. I'm anxious to get a win, the fans are anxious to get a win, but right now, I always say, you don't just win games. You've got to go out and do the stuff it takes to win the games. That's how you win a game."

This is the Tigers' first 0-5 start since the 2003 season when they opened 0-9 and went on to an American League-record 119 losses.

Brandon Inge drove in all three runs for the Tigers with an RBI double and two-run home run.

After a scoreless first inning, Detroit began the game's scoring in the home second. Jacque Jones started a two-out rally with a single to left field, and Inge followed with a double to deep center field. Jones was running hard at the crack of the bat and scored from first to give Detroit a 1-0 edge.

Jones and Inge again began a scoring sequence with two outs in the home fourth. Jones drew a walk, and Inge took a 2-0 fastball over the left field wall for a 3-0 Tigers lead.

Even though Willis still held the Sox without a hit through five innings, the Sox saw a lot of pitches in each at-bat, adding to Willis' climbing pitch count.

In the sixth, the bases on balls finally caught up to the newly acquired pitcher. Willis walked the first two batters, Nick Swisher and Orlando Cabrera, before giving up his first hit of the game to Thome. Thome ripped a double to center, scoring Swisher and moving Cabrera to third. The RBI knocked Willis out of the game despite only one hit surrendered.

With Miner on the hill, Konerko recorded an RBI ground-out to third base. After another walk to Dye, Carlos Quentin singled up the middle and Thome scored the game-tying run from second base. Joe Crede flied out to left field, but the ball was deep enough for Dye to cross the plate and give the White Sox a 4-3 lead.

Dye added an insurance run in the eighth with a solo home run to left field.

After Boone Logan and Scott Linebrink pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings, Chicago closer Bobby Jenks came in to shut the door. After getting the first two outs, Jones started yet another two-out rally with a single.

Not wanting the Jones-Inge combination to hurt them again, the Sox decided to walk Inge and try their luck with Clete Thomas, who had been 5-for-8 at the plate in the series. The move worked out for Chicago, as Thomas ground into a game-ending force out.

"We believe that we can comeback every game," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "We continue to fight back and never give up. Hopefully tomorrow, we will play the same way."
