Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - Pinch-hitter Shawn Riggans stepped in for an injured Dioner Navarro and stroked a three-run double, as Tampa Bay got to young right-hander Ian Kennedy early and beat the New York Yankees, 13-4, in the opener of a four-game series.
Carlos Pena clubbed a three-run homer, and Cliff Floyd added a solo shot and finished with two RBI for Tampa Bay. Akinori Iwamura had three hits and scored twice for the Rays, who blew the game open with a seven-run eighth inning.
Andy Sonnanstine (1-0) threw six solid innings for the Rays, who were coming off a two-game rain-shortened split at Baltimore to start the season. The 25- year-old righty was charged with six hits and four runs.
Hideki Matsui homered for the Yankees, who took two of three games at home from Toronto to begin the season. However, on this night, New York was limited to six hits and came up empty against the Rays.
The 23-year-old Kennedy (0-1), who made the fourth start of his major league career, gave up four hits and six runs before being lifted after 2 1/3 innings. He also walked four and struck out two before yielding to Jonathan Albaladejo.
LaTroy Hawkins was pounded for six hits and six runs in the eighth inning.
Carl Crawford scored on a Floyd single to left field in the opening inning and Tampa Bay put up five more runs in the third.
Navarro suffered a cut on the middle and ring finger on his throwing hand while in the dugout after the bottom of the second inning. He was put on the 15-day disabled list after the game.
"He slipped in the dugout and cut his hand," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "It was freaky. I think he grabbed onto the net and cut the inside of his hand. I didn't even want to look at it. Then Riggans came in and obviously he is supposed to hit a double with the bases loaded and drive in three runs."
Tampa Bay sent nine men to the plate in the third. With runners at the corners, B.J. Upton chipped an infield hit when a charging Alex Rodriguez couldn't make the throw in time to first base. That scored Iwamura. Floyd then walked to load the bases, and Riggans cleared them with a double to right- center.
"I got more of the plate. It was down, but I got more of the plate," Kennedy said of the pitch to Riggans.
Eric Hinske then stroked an RBI double off Albaladejo.
The Yankees made a game of it in the bottom half though with four runs. Matsui led off with a homer to right. Derek Jeter tripled in a run and then scored on a groundout from Bobby Abreu. Rodriguez singled with two down and Jason Giambi's double cut Tampa Bay's lead to 6-4.
However, the Yankee bats then went silent as the Rays retired the next 13 New York hitters until Johnny Damon walked to start the eighth. By then the damage was done, thanks to the explosive top of the inning.
Floyd tagged a Hawkins one-out pitch over the wall in right. Hawkins then retired Riggans on a grounder back to the mound, but the next seven Rays batters had hits. Hinske doubled, Nathan Haynes singled and Jason Bartlett scored both runners with a base hit to center. Iwamura and Crawford both singled, with Crawford's hit extending the lead to 10-4, as Hawkins exited to a chorus of boos.
Pena then drilled a Kyle Farnsworth offering over the wall in right before Upton singled to complete the incredible hit streak. Floyd finally fanned to end the inning.
