Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Chase Utley homered twice, drove in three runs and crossed the plate three times as the Philadelphia Phillies upended the Cincinnati Reds, 8-4 at Great American Ball Park.
Kyle Kendrick (1-0), coming off a 10-4 rookie campaign last season, surrendered four runs while scattering eight hits and two walks over five-plus innings for the win. Pat Burrell slammed his first home run of the season, and reigning National League MVP Jimmy Rollins scored twice and knocked in a run.
Josh Fogg (0-1) struggled in his first start as a Red, allowing six runs on five hits and three walks over four innings on the hill.
Ken Griffey Jr. reached a milestone with his two-RBI performance. The longtime fan favorite passed Reggie Jackson for 16th on the all-time RBI list (1,703), as he finished the game 2-for-4. Corey Patterson scored and knocked in a run.
The game was delayed an hour and 34 minutes due to rain.
The Phillies got on the board early thanks to a lead-off single by Rollins. After an Utley walk, Fogg attempted a pick off Rollins at second base, but his errant throw allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Howard took advantage and plated Rollins on a deep sacrifice fly to left field.
With a 1-0 lead, Burrell found a pitch he liked and pounded a two-run shot over left field wall to cap a three-run first inning for the Phils.
Corey Patterson led off the home first with a double, and, after being moved over to third by a Jeff Keppinger ground out, Griffey took a 1-2 pitch the opposite way to plate the Reds' first run.
After a scoreless second inning, Rollins led off the third with a double, and Utley drove an 0-1 pitch into the right field bleachers for a two-run homer, giving Philly a 5-1 advantage.
Griffey again answered back with his milestone RBI double in the bottom half of the third. After a seeing-eye-single by Brandon Phillips, Kendrick induced a much-needed double-play ball out of Adam Dunn with no outs in the inning. Griffey scored from third on the play, but the Phillies escaped the inning ahead, 5-3.
Fogg again ran into trouble in the fourth with runners on second and third and one out. Rollins grounded to first, but Pedro Feliz scored on the play to extend the Phillies' lead to 6-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Joey Votto scored on a Patterson sacrifice fly to center field, but Utley nullified the run with a lead-off homer off relief pitcher Jeremy Affeldt. The All-Star second baseman also reached a notable plateau, as the fifth-inning shot was the 100th home run of his career.
Kendrick managed to get through the fifth unscathed, while relievers Ryan Madson and newly acquired Rudy Seanez combined to pitch three scoreless innings.
Shane Victorino provided an insurance run in the ninth with a RBI single, and J.C. Romero preserved the 8-4 decision with a perfect ninth inning.
