Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jayson Werth drew a four-pitch, bases- loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Washington Nationals, 8-7, to salvage the finale of a three-game series at Citizens Bank Park.
Jimmy Rollins kicked things off with a single, and after Shane Victorino laid down a bunt, Rollins went all the way to third, diving in safely in a race to the bag. Jesus Colome then intentionally walked both Chase Utley and Ryan Howard, but couldn't find the strike zone against Werth. The final pitch hit the catcher's glove and skipped toward the backstop as Rollins trotted home with the winning run.
"It's an instinct play and you really can't teach that," said Philadelphia's Geoff Jenkins, of Rollins reaching third on the bunt.
The rally made a winner out of reliever Clay Condrey (1-0), who hurled a perfect tenth. The Phils bullpen overcame a poor outing by Jamie Moyer, who allowed six runs -- just three earned -- and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Moyer, who was making the 552nd start of his big league career, also walked a batter and struck out three.
Chris Coste had two hits -- including a solo homer -- and two runs scored in the win for the Phillies.
Colome (0-1) was saddled with the loss for Washington, allowing one run and one hit to go along with four walks in 1 1/3 innings. Starter Jason Bergmann lasted 5 1/3 frames, yielding five runs and seven hits, with a walk and six strikeouts.
Christian Guzman, Lastings Milledge and Jesus Flores each had three hits, and Ronnie Belliard drove in two runs for the Nationals, who had defeated Atlanta on Sunday in their season opener before taking the first two contests of this set.
Trailing 6-1, Philadelphia exploded for six runs in the sixth inning. Utley and Howard ignited the rally with a pair of one-out singles, Pat Burrell drove home Utley with a liner just inside the bag at third and a base hit by Jenkins cut it to 6-3.
Saul Rivera was then summoned from the bullpen, but promptly uncorked a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Pedro Feliz under the shortstop's glove made it 6-5. Consecutive singles by Coste and pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs then tied it up, and after Rollins was hit by a pitch, Victorino's first hit of the year put the Phils up 7-6.
"Our bullpen pitched really well," said Phils manager Charlie Manuel. "The hits that they got were tough ones. I always used to say if our pitching can hold them, we are bound to put together a big inning."
Washington tied it in the eighth on Guzman's RBI single to left off J.C. Romero, and the Phils squandered an opportunity to pull ahead when Werth grounded into a fielder's choice with the bases loaded.
Moyer and the Phils struggled in the early going, as Guzman led off with a double and Milledge legged out an infield single. What looked like a dead double play ball then produced an out at second, but Utley threw wide of first on the relay, allowing Guzman to trot home. Austin Kearns walked, and Aaron Boone's single scored Zimmerman for a 2-0 lead.
The rally continued with a two-run double by Belliard, and after Felipe Lopez flied out, a line drive double to left off the bat of Flores made it 5-0.
A solo shot by Coste cut it to 5-1 in the home half, but the Nats tacked on a run in their next at-bat as Guzman reached on an error and later scored on Kearns' single.
