National League Game Summary - Houston at San Diego

Final Score: Houston 2 - San Diego 3

San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Tadahito Iguchi drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, as the San Diego Padres edged the Houston Astros, 3-2, to take three out of four in the season-opening series at Petco Park.

Randy Wolf, who signed with San Diego as a free agent in the winter, was superb in his debut, allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts over six innings in a no-decision. Enrique Gonzalez (1-0) picked up the victory despite giving up the tying run in the top of the seventh and Trevor Hoffman, coming off a blown save Wednesday night, tossed a perfect ninth for his second save of the season.

Kevin Kouzmanoff went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer, while Scott Hairston finished 3-for-3 with a walk for the Padres. Hairston fell a home run short of the cycle.

Shawn Chacon threw six strong innings for the Astros, allowing two runs on five hits while walking four. Chacon also fanned four batters. Oscar Villarreal (0-1) gave up one run on three hits in two innings of relief.

Mark Loretta had two hits and knocked in a run for Houston.

"Shawn pitched well for six innings," Astros manager Cecil Cooper said.

Houston tied the score at two in top of the seventh on an RBI double by J.R. Towles. After Ty Wigginton was called out on strikes to begin the inning, Jose Cruz Jr. worked a walk and scored when Towles pulled a slider into the left field corner.

The Padres quickly answered with one out in the home-half of the seventh on Iguchi's RBI single. Hairston tripled to center and Iguchi drove him in with a grounder back through the middle of the infield.

Heath Bell overcame a two-out double by Carlos Lee in the eighth, while Hoffman needed only eight pitches to close out the game.

The Padres jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the home-half of the first inning. Hairston led off the frame with double and, two batters later, Kouzmanoff crushed the first pitch he saw from Chacon -- a fastball -- over the wall in left-center field.

San Diego loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, but failed to score as Adrian Gonzalez hit a one-hopper back to Chacon, who calmly tossed the ball over to first baseman Lance Berkman to end the threat.

Loretta's two-out double in the top of the third plated Hunter Pence and brought the Astros to within one.
