St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Albert Pujols had two hits and scored a run, and St. Louis rode the arm of Brad Thompson to a 3-0 victory over Colorado in the rubber match of a three-game set at Busch Stadium.
Thompson (1-0), who earned himself a spot in the team's starting rotation with a solid spring and injuries to Chris Carpenter and Joel Pineiro, tossed 6 2/3 innings and scattered just six hits. He also walked a pair and struck out six in the win, while the bullpen followed with a solid effort. Jason Isringhausen nailed down the save in the ninth.
Troy Glaus and Aaron Miles each had two hits, while Glaus knocked in a run and Miles scored one for St. Louis. Thompson helped himself with an RBI single.
Dominican native Ubaldo Jimenez was saddled with the loss for Colorado, which has dropped back-to-back regular season games for the first time in more than six months. Jimenez (0-1) was chased in the fifth, having surrendered three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. He worked with a mid-90's fastball, a solid breaking pitch and a change-up, but struggled with his command in walking five batters.
Garrett Atkins went 3-for-4 and Chris Iannetta had two hits for the Rockies.
The Cardinals, who were turned away in the first after loading the bases, finally broke through in the third. Miles and Pujols laced back-to-back singles to open the frame, before Rick Ankiel's base hit to right plated the first run. Glaus followed with a line drive to left, scoring Pujols for a 2-0 lead.
Colorado threatened in the fifth but failed to score, and St. Louis padded its lead in the home half after Ryan Ludwick walked, stole second and later scored on Thompson's base hit through the right side.
The Rockies had a runner cut down at the plate in the sixth, and the bats were quiet the rest of the way, behind the combined efforts of Ron Villone, Anthony Reyes and Isringhausen.
