Cleveland, OH (Sports Network) - Joe Crede and Juan Uribe homered to back the two-hit pitching of John Danks and three relievers, as the Chicago White Sox salvaged the finale of a three-game season-opening series against the Cleveland Indians with a 2-1 victory at Progressive Field.
Danks did not yield a hit until the sixth and finished allowing only one run on two hits in 6 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out a pair, but Octavio Dotel (1-1) notched the win by recording the last out of the seventh inning. Scott Linebrink worked the eighth and Bobby Jenks notched the save with a perfect ninth.
Ryan Garko drove in the lone run for the Indians, who had captured the first two games of the series by scores of 10-8 and 7-2.
Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook (0-1) pitched well over 7 1/3 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Crede snapped a 1-1 tie in the eighth with his first homer of the season, as he drilled a 2-0 pitch from Westbrook over the wall in left field. The Sox then put two on with one out and chased Westbrook, but Jensen Lewis fanned Jim Thome and got Paul Konerko on a grounder to short.
Linebrink, signed to a four-year deal as a free agent in November, made his first appearance for the Sox and retired all three batters he faced in the eighth. Jenks then set down the side in order in the ninth.
Danks and Westbrook threw up zeroes for the first five innings, but Uribe broke up the scoreless duel when he belted Westbrook's first offering of the sixth inning over the left-center field wall.
The Indians finally got their first hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth when Casey Blake led off with a solid single to center field. Blake advanced to second on a bunt, but Grady Sizemore and Jason Michaels each grounded out to keep it a 1-0 game.
Chicago threatened for more in the seventh when the first two batters reached base, but A.J. Pierzynski bunted into a force out at third and Carols Quentin bounced into a 1-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Cleveland tied it in the bottom of the seventh, as Travis Hafner drew a one- out walk and scored on Garko's double over the head of Jermaine Dye in right field. Dye and center fielder Nick Swisher then collided on Franklin Gutierrez's fly ball to shallow right-center field, allowing Gutierrez to reach second. Garko, however, only advanced to third and both runners were stranded when Asdrubal Cabrera grounded to third and Blake flied to center against Dotel.
The White Sox had just two baserunners through the first five innings. Thome walked with two outs in the fourth and reached second on a passed ball before Konerko flied to center. Pierzynski singled for the first hit of the game with one out in the fifth and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded there after Quentin grounded to third and Crede struck out.
Cleveland's lone runner through the first five innings came on a one-out walk to Garko in the second. Gutierrez followed with a deep fly ball to left-center field, but Swisher made a leaping catch at the wall, and Cabrera grounded to third.
