Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jeff Suppan threw 6 1/3 solid innings and Jason Kendall went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in, helping Milwaukee top the Chicago Cubs, 8-2, at Wrigley Field.
Suppan (1-0) gave up two runs on a pair of solo homers and scattered four other hits for the Brewers, who also beat Chicago on Monday in the season- opener. Kendall, who played in 57 games for the Cubs last season and signed a one-year deal with Milwaukee this offseason, stroked a pair of doubles and also scored a run.
Salomon Torres and David Riske, also Brewers newcomers, combined to throw 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits and a walk.
Derrek Lee and Geovany Soto hit the homers for the Cubs, who hadn't lost the first two games of a season since 2001, against Montreal. Ted Lilly (0-1) struggled in giving up four runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.
Rickie Weeks set the tone for the game by homering on the first pitch of the contest. The Brewers gradually built up their advantage, scoring at least one run in six separate innings.
Ryan Braun doubled in the fourth, keying a short rally that saw Bill Hall drive Braun in with a single, and Corey Hart plate Hall with a double.
Lee homered in the bottom half of the same inning, but Braun then singled in a run in the fifth inning, restoring Milwaukee's three-run advantage at 4-1.
The Brewers added another in the sixth, as Hart scored from third on an error by Soto as Kendall stole second base.
Chicago got one run back in the seventh on Soto's homer, which ended Suppan's day. Milwaukee tacked on another run in the eighth on an RBI grounder by Gabe Kapler for a 6-2 lead, and a two-run double by Kendall in the ninth gave Milwaukee a six-run cushion before Riske closed out the game.
Riske threw two nearly perfect innings, surrendering a walk while striking out three. Milwaukee's pitching was strong overall, as the Brewers staff put down the Cubs in order three times, and only saw more than four batters come to bat twice.
