Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Rafael Furcal scored from second on Delwyn Young's infield single in the bottom of the ninth, as Los Angeles downed San Francisco, 3-2, in the middle contest of a three-game series at Dodger Stadium.
Young hit a 2-2 pitch into the hole between first and second, but Ray Durham smothered it to keep it in the field. Furcal was running full speed with two outs, and Rich Aurilia's throw home was late.
"It's exciting to come up with the winning hit like that," said Young, who had root canal surgery in the morning but played in the contest. "Especially at home against the Giants it made it even better."
Takashi Saito (1-0) struck out the side in the ninth to record the victory. Keiichi Yabu (0-1) gave up the game-winning run in the ninth to take the loss.
Andre Either finished 3-for-5 and Furcal added two hits and an RBI for the Dodgers, who are off to a quick 2-0 start.
Newly-acquired Aaron Rowand had his second straight two-hit game for the Giants, who dropped a second straight at Dodger Stadium.
Durham, Rowand and Jose Castillo all singled to load the bases in the top of the seventh -- the final hit deflected off LA starting pitcher Derek Lowe's left foot, prompting his exit from the contest. Joe Beimel entered and Brian Bocock walked to force in the game's first run. Eugenio Velez's one-out single scored Rowand for a 2-0 edge.
Lowe was diagnosed with a left calf contusion. The sinker-baller gave up two runs on nine hits -- all singles -- with four strikeouts over six-plus innings.
The Dodgers knotted the contest just after stretch time. Blake DeWitt and Mark Sweeney each singled then Dewitt and pinch-runner Chin-lung Hu converted a double steal. Furcal knocked them both home with a base hit to center.
Fireworks erupted in the home half of the sixth. Third base coach Larry Bowa was quickly ejected by third base umpire Ed Montague for arguing. Bowa didn't leave quietly, refusing to leave the field for some time as manager Joe Torre attempted to hold him back.
Matt Cain started for the Giants and pitched scoreless baseball for 5 2/3 frames. The right-hander surrendered three hits and four walks with five strikeouts.
"We got the runs and couldn't keep the lead," said Cain. "It's hard on all of us, not just me."
