San Diego, CA (Sports Network) - Scott Hairston belted his first home run of the 2008 season to lead the San Diego Padres past the Houston Astros, 2-1, in the second of a four-game, season-opening set.
Chris Young (1-0) allowed one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work to get the win for San Diego, which beat Houston for the second straight night. Kevin Kouzmanoff scored for the Padres and Khalil Greene went 3-for-4 with a double. Trevor Hoffman yielded just one hit in his one inning of work to earn the save.
Michael Bourn had the lone RBI for the Astros, who lost for the second night in a row to begin the 2008 campaign. Hunter Pence went 2-for-5, but left four runners on base in defeat. Lance Berkman, Carlos Lee, Miguel Tejada and Ty Wigginton each contributed a hit in the loss.
Brandon Backe (0-1) surrendered two runs on five hits in five innings on the hill en route to the loss. Backe also fanned three and walked three.

Tejada scored Houston's first run of the 2008 season on a bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth, after Bourn was awarded the free pass on four straight pitches from Thatcher.
"It's that old adage again, good pitching stops good hitting," Houston manager Cecil Cooper said. "He (Young) pitched well."
